It did seem at least a little relevant to the topic of people thinking they know better than Mozart...

(Although in private Mozart agreed with the 'too many notes' part...)

The first is a sincere admiration for the high degree of ingenuity that some manage to show in their attempts to provide logical reasons why so many find so much modern music so unpleasant.

The second is a sincere amazement that some seem to think that they know better than Mozart.
I don't know if either one of these is referring to me. Am I the new designated idiot?

I think they're both referring to most of us, CD.

Most of us think we know better than the pieman-meeter.

With justification.

Yes autoharp. Some of us recall how a certain sinfonia concertante which was clearly a rehash by A. N. Other, was taken, by this pieman-meeter you refer to, as being a Mozart original. He also seemed to have some difficulty coming to terms with just how relatively little of K 626 was actually penned by Mozart himself.

I'm somewhat enjoying the Ries symphonies at the moment. There seems to be rather a lot of regurgitated Beethoven in some of them.

Really, autoharp? What a silly comment, if I may say so.

It was easy to write, I suppose. But, of course, most emphatically it's not justifiable at all, as you know neither who I am nor how much or how little I know about anything. All you know about me can only be what you infer from the comments that I choose to write on these boards - and you may, of course, infer rightly or wrongly.

That said, I'd be perfectly ready to accept that you will know more than I do about contemporary music.  Indeed, I'd be delighted to accept it.

Sorry, but what is a pieman-meeter?

There's a sort of Ravel connection here. Try Googling for "met a pieman". Wink

I think what Autoharp was saying was that the "comments you choose to write" appear to originate from someone who either is arrogant, narrow-minded and wilfully ignorant or wishes to appear to have those attributes, and that in the circumstances the former seems more likely.

You probably won't get a straight answer, C D. It relates to the nursery rhyme that begins:  "Simple Simon met a pieman going to the fair".

Autoharp used it, as others have done, as a mild insult to me to imply that I am simple and unintelligent - though in fact it was I who first used it against myself some years ago on the other boards when I had posted something in error, so as an insult it fails completely and of course I take no offence.

Maybe you are right in your assessment of Autoharp's motivations, Richard. Right or not, I'm sure he/she won't disagree with you.

But of course, one's consideration as to which (if any) comments on a messageboard may appear to be arrogant, narrow-minded and ignorant - or for that matter, reasonable, sensible and intelligent - depend on one's prior view of the subject under discussion, don't they?

I assume from you remark here that it would not occur to you to consider the possibility that it might depend at lest as much on one's prior knowledge of the said subject? Richard is a composer. So is Autoharp. So are several other members of this forum, including myself. As best I understand it (and you may of course correct me if I am wrong), you are not a composer. Now, whilst composers may not expect to know everything about contemporary music, even though they are the makers of it, it is surely less than reasonable to assume that they have no more knowledge of the subject than someone like you would be expected to have? If you will make the kind of remarks that you made earlier about certain contemporary music from your position to an audience including contemporary composers - and you offer them up as though they are more facts than mere opinions (and even opinions ought to have some explicable basis in any case) - you have little reason to be surprised at attention being drawn to the arrogance, narrow-mindedness and ignorance implicit in those remarks.

Best,

Alistair
