After a few events lately, I have decided we need to update the rules.

1.  Swearing must be kept to a minimum, and profanity directed at anyone else is certainly not acceptable.

2.  No direct attacks/stalking posts will be acceptable on the forum.

3.  Posts deemed by moderators to be libellous, excessively inflammatory in their subject matter or abusive to fellow members will be edited and users warned, suspended or banned upon repeated breaking of the rules. [edited 01-12-2007]

4.  Impersonation in any shape or form will not be tolerated.  Anyone found impersonating another user/person, will have their account removed.

5.  A user must only have one account.  If a user registers with more than one account and becomes disruptive, both/all of that users accounts will be deleted.

6.  If a new user posts predominately disruptive posts, the moderation team, depending on the circumstances, can and will ban that user.

7.  Threads that do not explicitly break the above rules but are borderline will be moved to the arguement area, regardless of where the topic would actually reside.

Please remember that we do not want to have to moderate anything, or ban anyone.  We want to have a board that isn't overly moderated, where people feel comfortable to express their opinions without fear of being moderated.  However, when someones opinions make this board a less enjoyable place for the majority of users, we need to act.

Added 28-11-2007:

8.  Where members choose to use a pseudonym that must be respected. A member may of course choose to post information which reveals his/her own off-board identity. Posts revealing the identity of a member other than the poster will be removed should that member complain. The moderators may also remove such information without warning should they feel it necessary.

Thanks to Michael for clarifying matters and issuing an eminently reasonable set of rules.

After the events of recent days it seems we might need another rule.

Many of us here use pseudonyms. Some are of course happy to be called by their real name in discussion, which is of course fine. Some are happy for other members to know who they are but prefer only their pseudonym to be used on the board. I hope that's fine too because I'm one of them. Smiley

I've discussed the following with Ron and Mort and am humbled to present Rule 8.

8.  Where members choose to use a pseudonym that must be respected. A member may of course choose to post information which reveals his/her own off-board identity. Posts revealing the identity of a member other than the poster will be removed should that member complain. The moderators may also remove such information without warning should they feel it necessary.

Oliver, or should I say ... Josaphat ... , might I recommend you edit michael's original post so that all the rules are up at the top?

(funny; I already thought there existed such a rule)

An excellent notion, Meshezabeel. Of course a new post was necessary in any case to draw the attention of Members to the addition.

Yes Oliver, or should I say ... Abelard ... , that was an entirely sensible thing to do I agree.

Shouldn't the new rule be number 7? Wink

After a little discussion we've also decided to tweak rule 3 very slightly.

Old:

3.  Posts deemed by moderators to be Racist, Homophobic, Libelous or abuse to fellow members or moderators will be edited and users warned, suspended or banned upon continual breaking of the rules.

New:

3.  Posts deemed by moderators to be libellous, excessively inflammatory in their subject matter or abusive to fellow members will be edited and users warned, suspended or banned upon repeated breaking of the rules.

The intention is to allow action in the case of inflammatory posting which doesn't fit the specific categories Michael originally envisaged. I hope this change will be agreeable to all.

Er, and tinners, I'm happy with 8 being where it is. Smiley

Dear all,

After extensive behind the scene discusions with the moderators, it has been decided that an ammendment to the board rules is necessary, and takes effect as of now.

I am posting the ammended full board rules here once again, so that members can see what changes have been made.  However, in the next few days, the new rules will replace the rules post currently displayed in post 1 of this thread.

New board rules

After a few events lately, I have decided we need to update the rules.

1.  Swearing must be kept to a minimum, and profanity directed at anyone else is certainly not acceptable.

2.  No direct attacks/stalking posts will be acceptable on the forum.

3.  Posts deemed by moderators to be libellous, excessively inflammatory in their subject matter or abusive to fellow members will be edited and users warned, suspended, put under temporary restriction or banned completely upon repeated breaking of the rules. [edited 13-07-2008]

7.  Threads that do not explicitly break the above rules but are borderline will be moved to the argument area, regardless of where the topic would actually reside.

Please remember that we do not want to have to moderate anything, or ban anyone.  We want to have a board that isn't overly moderated, where people feel comfortable to express their opinions without fear of being moderated.  However, when someone's opinions make this board a less enjoyable place for the majority of users, we need to act, either by temporarily restricting their access to threads, or in extreme circumstances, enforcing a total ban. [edited 13-07-2008]

Added 28-11-2007:

8.  Where members choose to use a pseudonym that must be respected. (In common with many other boards, we appreciate that their adoption is for the user's security, and therefore recommend their use.) A member may of course choose to post information which reveals his/her own off-board identity. Posts revealing the identity of a member other than the poster will be removed should that member complain. The moderators may also remove such information without warning should they feel it necessary. [edited 13-07-2008]

To clarify what temporary restriction is, it is a group in which members can be placed to restrict their access.  Whilst a member of this group, the user can only send and receive PM's, as well as being able to view the board.  Actual posting of topics, or posts, is denied completely.

Regards,

Michael.

I have only just seen this thread, despite logging in occasionally over the last few internetless weeks and keeping (or so I thought!) an eye out for important posts.

I remember asking more than once last time there were changes to the board rules, members' polls etc.: would it not be possible for the administrator/moderators to send out a mass email or PM to all members when changes are being made/proposed? I'm not very happy with the prospect of posting to a board whose basic rules I'm not aware of, and I don't consider the simple posting of a message in a normal thread to be adequate notification, since it can easily get lost in among all the other threads.

Surely there must be some way of notifying all members of such developments, at least in a manner that would ensure it reaches those members who have not withheld their email addresses? I would be happy with a PM myself, since I've deliberately set up email notifications so that if I am away from the boards unexpectedly I am still aware if anyone sends me a message and if needs be I can make a point of logging back in to reply.

Hi tinners - we seem to be the only ones awake...

In theory the tab marked 'notify' (see near the bottom of this page) enables you (or anyone) to set up email notification of replies for this or any topic. So that service is already available on an opt-in basis and not just for this thread.
