I'm laying myself open to massive professional criticism here, I realise, from the mighty likes of Ron and others; but I've just spent a fair bit on a new set-up recommended by a relative (who should know - and in fact it's a cheap package with discounts etc. thrown in). So, Ron or anyone else, do tell me me I haven't made a gargantuan error:

samson ms200 monitor stands

art macromix 4 channel personal stereo mixer

technics sl1210 mkII black

tannoy reveal 5a active

sony tc-we475 e-line twin cassette deck

denon tu1800 dab tuner - black finish

sony cdp-xe370 e-line cd player - black

belkin pureAV home cinema surge protector - 8 socket

martle,

If you like the sound it makes and it communicates the spirit and emotion of the music that pushes your buttons, then that's all you really need. The ultimate test of whether a system is right for any listener is usually gauged by how many more dics than the one which they originally intended playing they actually end up listening to; the harder it is not to go on listening, the better the system. (As an incidental comment, the majority of musicians I know have really quite low-fi systems - it seems that in many cases their brains fill in what the system misses out....)

Ron, thank you indeed. I have until recently matched the description of musicians you give towards the end of that post; and, it must be said, I've been inspired to listen 'better' (i.e. with better fidelity) by members of this board. I shall be purchasing a fresh anorak any day now.  Wink
But that's just what I suspected to be true: I've been labouring with a £400 system, purchased 17 years ago from Dixons. Time to grow up? (Mind you, it lasted pretty well!).  Grin

Ron, if I might sound you out on a quite different level of audio fidelity, I have been trying to find a reliable portable player for mp2s saved from DAB. So far I have only had limited success. I've tried various 'personal' CD players which are mp3 compatible, and start of reasonable well playing mp2s, but then throw a hissy fit and produce some horrendous 'digital' cracks and splutters before carrying on as normal for a while before throwing another fit. I have had the same problems with hard disc players and solid state devices. Any ideas? Any of your contacts likely to know?

Bryn,

I don't know many people who are involved in that side of things at all, I'm afraid: in fact I can't even think of anyone who'd be likely to know....
