Thanks, everyone.  I bought a pair of Sony MDREX 32 for £19.95 from shop in Oxford Street yesterday, and they seem the goods.

What extension cable?  Was I diddled?

It did come with a footling and eminently losable little plastic container to hold the pods when not in use, or wind up slack cable when not needed.  Can't see me using it much.
