Here is a review of the John Butt Matthew Passion in Classics Today by David Vernier, who appears to claim to be able retrospectively to read JS Bach's mind.

Why do you question this ability, richard. Surely it is as certain as it is that Stravinsky would much rather have written Les Noces for soloists, chorus and orchestra, ranter than making do with Soloists, chorus and 4 pianos. Wink

Anyway. Any word yet on the Kuijken vol. 6? BWV 18, 23 and 1. Fingers crossed it measures up to vol. 5...

The Ricercar Consort version of the Trauer-Ode has made it over the threshold here but the intervention of some kick-ass gear from Henry Archer has so far kept it from reaching the actual player... Roll Eyes

From Presto Classical:

The Cantatas BWV 18 and BWV 23 were intended for the two last Sundays before Lent, the “Sexagesima” and “Estomihi” Sundays. In these performances Sigiswald Kuijken follows the thesis that the cantatas were written for solo singers, because Bach very often had no choir at his disposal.'

Er... oh, never mind.  Roll Eyes

I do agree with Mr Vernier about the singing of Erbarme dich, which went out on R3 the other day.Whatever kind of singer one needs here, it certainly isn't an emotionally detached one!
