I'm delighted and astonished to find that other people find something in this film. I thought you had to be as peculiar, confused and emotionally mixed up as me. But then I find that with a lot of art: the realisation that other people are weird too.
I've just had a delightful telephone conversation with my aunt who, being nearly 12 years older than my mother, was 15 or 16 when A Canterbury Tale was filmed. She was delighted to be reminded of the film and told me how she knew some of the children who were in the boat and how she remembered seeing Eric Portman and Sheila Sim standing by the Westgate "as clearly as if it were yesterday". She was surprised to learn it was on dvd, so I've just ordered her a copy!

That's wonderful, IGI!
And my thanks too to Ted R for initiating all this by mentioning the film.

Is that the Eiffel towers one? (Yes - just checked!) I bought the DVD a while back but packed it in anticipation of imminently moving (ho ho - hollow laughter) and haven't watched it yet - though I saw it many years ago. I love Kind Hearts and Coronets - another one to watch again soon. I trust you've seen that, IGI? (Apologies if this has already been mentioned but I haven't time to trawl through the thread! Oh, I could do a search I suppose...

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Talking of black and white films, can I be bothered to stay up for another couple of hours to watch A Hard Day's Night ?

We are able to-day to recommend to all members the praiseworthy and significant film Maurice. Although it came out in 1987 we only yesterday got round to watching it. How long it is! - well over two hours. We suppose that is because it has so much to say.

That may be so but the unfortunate presence in it of Hugh Grant rules it out as far as I'm concerned.

Has anyone heard of this new film thats just started doing the cinema rounds about Beethoven? It centres around the composer writing a sympohony(possibly no9?), and this consertoire student is hired to assist the composer with the copying. Beethoven is unsure, as the copyist is a female(! ), but gradually the relationship betweeen the two people seems to be working out alright, in the end. Sounds like a good film. However, as far as the Cine World chain of cinemas goes, the only one is shown in Ipswich!! Ao no go at the moement. if anybody eslse has seen this film, please let me no.

No need for IGI, there are loads of great films I haven't seen! Happy Viewing - when you do. Make sure you rent it well before term starts or you won't have time to watch it!
