George is referrring to 'The Siegfried Idyll', broadcast by the BBC in 1969, featuring Alan Badel in his second go at playing Wagner, with Barbara Leigh-Hunt as Cosima.  I've never seen it, and have no idea if it still exists in the archives (probably not).

That's the one, Swan Knight. Thank you!

Barbara Leigh-Hunt as Cosima: it's all coming back now. I'm fairly sure that Jack Brymer was one of the players on the stairs and I think that was how he first met and became friends with Timothy West (who was probably Richter rather than von Bulow come to think of it). I may be making this bit up but I have a vague memory that they filmed the staircase bit on the ACTUAL staircase (omigod! Shocked). But if that is impossible because the house was pulled down years before I'm more than ready to have that illusion shattered.

The Curb Your Enthusiasm version has Cheryl woken up by Siegfried Idyll (played on strings at the bottom of the stairs) as a birthday present. The moment during the performance when Larry's friend Jeff comes in the door behind the players in golfing gear and a baseball cap must be one of the funniest things I've ever seen!

Meistersinger is performed on a lawn at night at the end of the episode (conducted by Larry David!) to mete out revenge on a man who thinks Larry is a self-hating Jew. It's brilliant!
