I remember him trying to put me at my ease . . .

We suppose most talented composers are nice and kind people. They have to be sensitive simply because of the nature of their Art. A few acquire a reputation for gruffness but it comes from the wish not to be interrupted in their labours, not from aggression.

Is there another word in English that's quite as satisfying to sing as 'cold'? I doubt it. Although 'night' runs it damn close, at least in that solo.
