What saddens me is that it took itunes to uncover the hoax. Aren't there reams of pianists (or student pianists) listening to many recordings of these works and comparing them......? Did no one suspect earlier?

Of course it should be easy for Mr B Coupe (or whatever his name is) to refute the accusations.
If someone thought a CD I had produced and engineered was a fake, I would be able to produce witnesses that the actual sessions had been held at ***** recording studio, on certain dates, and I would have documentation to prove that the sessions were held.
I would also have the "takes" in which sections or whole movements were recorded, including talk back between the producer, engineer, and the artist(s) involved. There would possibly be a page turner involved as well.
As well as this, there would be the edits which could be shown to have taken place, either by the tape splices, or these days, by the computer version showing the takes had been edited together. (If recorded on DAT there would be tapes of the recorded "takes."
So any producer wrongly accused of fraud should easily be able to provide such proof and easily clear their name. In the case of Joyce Hatto and Mr B Coupe they must have had their own recording studio and equipment, which must still exist?
