Syd,

To give this thread the seriousness it deserves for a change, I actually agree with you that the clip you posted is very good.  I get annoyed with all the guff and hyperbole that we hear in modern life, and it would be good if there were a refuge somewhere to avoid it occasionally.  R3 gets quite close, but has become a bit too chatty.  Strange how this has been only recently.  Bryn's posts were from 1974, but I was listening to some old tapes of R3 in the car from the late 80s, and the delivery was very similar to yours.

I also found Sydney's announcer very fine. He did exhibit one mannerism which I've always found a little disconcerting: that of occasionally taking a pause or even a breath before 'difficult' names. It's rather tricky for me to say anything about an accent from 1964, not having any real context to do so. But the amount and nature of the content were very fine, and the integration of German/Austrian names into the flow of the announcer's speech struck what seemed to me to be a good balance.
