In the post today:

Donizetti Dom Sébastien, roi de Portugal recorded at the ROH by Opera Rara last September..well, anything with a Grand Inquisitor in the cast has got to be worth investigating!  Wink (especially when I found it at a very nice price).

Probably the result of my being T'ed off with Hurwitz's infamous 115 page diatribe. The more I read of it, the less weight it carried. I will necessarily treat his reviews with much greater circumspection in the future. So many words spent on such little real supporting evidence.

Well, not so much just bought, as delivered in the post today, having ordered and paid for it last week:

Alter Ego performs Philip Glass, and the Morgan and Dullea CD, "Opera".

The surname is Harris. I refer you to the Peter Sellers recording, "Common Entrance" re. the use of a crowbar.

On a whim I bid on four volumes of Vivaldi's cello concerti on ebay and just won them... for 99p each  Shocked

No idea what they will be like but at 99p per disk I'm willing to risk hating them  Wink

Do let me know what you think of Norrington's Mahler, Bryn. My CD of 4 arrived over a week ago and I was impressed; some swift tempi and 'authentic' orchestral layout - divided violins, basses along the back - and a much better soprano soloist than I've heard for a while, especially compared to Renee Fleming whose efforts unfortunately somewhat undermine Abbado's Berlin recording.

Renee Fleming in Mahler 4 ?!?!?  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

what a hideous notion

Did you hear her massacre Debussy's Ariette oubliees a year or two back? A disgusting travesty.

arrived today:

Janacek Piano Works (complete), Hakon Austbo, Brilliant Classics.

Marvellous Sonata 1.X.1905 with great clarity between the various musical ideas, and pulsating inner ostinati. Looking forward to hearing the rest later. Was going to get Andsnes or Firkusny, but this was dirt cheap, so may have to investigate the others later.

Been away for a couple of days. When I got back this evening, on the door mat were "La Toavola Cromatica", "Soviet Avant-Garde 2" (Lourié, Mossolov, Polovinkin and Roslavetz piano works played by Stefen Schleiermacher), and Liszt's "Beethoven-Kantate" with Beethoven's "Chorfantasie" (Komen/Weil).

Now which to spin first?

Personally I'd be spinning La tavola cromatica at this time of night rather than Mossolov and Roslavetz but chacun à son goût...
