Reply to A, message 960.

This is a poster advertizing a concert in Leningrad in 1928, 30 of December.
This sounds like a very interesting concert of a State Philharmonic orchestra under the direction of Malko and with participation of Paul Hindemith (viola). Also there are other participants that I don't know about. But can you imagine that Paul Hindemith was there.
It doesn't say what they played.

Thank you for posting this A, It was very interesting.

I got as far as Symphony Concert, orchestra and Nicolai Malko. I learnt the Russian alphabet once. I missed Hindemith. Is a viola called an alto or something in Russian, then?

George, that one makes me want to dive into the snuffly patch in my pillow.

Ooh, feeling a bit radical (and in Tommo-baiting mood). How about doing them out of order? Did Tonyb specify a strict sequence?

No, sorry - as you were.

Worth remembering that French was for some time the Court language in Tsarist Russia. The French word for viola is "alto" after all.

Mary Chambers. Yes indeed viola is called alt (AL soft sign T). It is possible to understand and guess a lot if one knows the alphabet and knows the subject people are talking about.

Many words are similar or start with the same letter. Still there are many differences.
Do people here know the book by Orlando Figes Natasha's Dance. (A cultural history of Russia).
I just started to read it and it so far think it is a good book that explains Russian "soul", culture.
