The male-dominated aura of The Lord of the Rings is to some degree a reflection of historical occurrences. A King leading his forces and riding to the help of others is pure chivalry, not exactly unknown to many male monarchs through history. Also, females do occupy important positions of the narrative. A specific example; the High Nazgûl is killed by Éowyn, a woman. Galadriel has been compared (over-zealously or not) to the Virgin Mary.

But none of this excuses The Hobbit, which does not contain a single female, as far as I can recall. [edit] apart from the spoon-stealing fusspot.

As he so eloquently wrote in 1986, 'I don't remember falling in love to be this, well, explosive and painful. Certainly the last time round you had this feeling of an organic process, Marvell's "vegetable love", not this desperate, urgent, must-have-you-now, can't-have-you-now, this-is-wrong-yet-feels-so-right-falling-on-swords-dead-on-a-beach-mild-und-leise sort of thing. Hmph.'
