Now that the statutory ten hours have passed and by way of a clue towards No.222, let us consider the two puzzles which closely followed it, now safely solved:

223 Gottschalk – Le Banjo
224 Debussy – Mandoline

Mmmm, that should provide food for thought.  Wink

Is puzzle 222 from Lalo's Symphonie espagnole?

Puzzle 222 must be an orchestral adaptation of Lalo's Guitare, Op. 28?

Yes, Lalo's Guitarre op.28 as orchestrated by Gabriel Pierné.

An unlikely one for me to get right, however fumblingly Embarrassed, but quite attractive sounding.

Puzzle 242 is from Antonín Dvořák's great symphonic poem Vodník (The Water Goblin), based on the eponymous folk ballad by Karel Jaromír Erben. I feel I have an unfair advantage with this one, as I not only know it but have conducted it.

And here is a picture of someone in a traditional Czech Water Goblin costume (judging from the skin-tone and general colour scheme, it may perhaps be Mr Martle?):

Correct, Mr Opilec. 242 is indeed Dvořák's The Water Goblin.

244 is the Mendelssohn Konzertstück Nr. 1 for clarinet, basset horn and orchestra. We have indeed performed this in the piano version employing a basset horn made by Uebel of Markneukirchen and owned then as now by our then clarinet teacher, one Philiip Miechel. And if we don't get our behinds into gear we will be in danger of missing a rendezvous with a prospective basset-horn player in our own upcoming Stockhausen performance.

How small the world is.
