Very good Mr. Martle - commissioned by the French government in 1964 and dedicated to the dead of two world wars, the work was on one occasion performed in Chartres cathedral in the presence of General de Gaulle.

489 - Sonata no 6 in G by JS Bach.

Nice to see this thread being revived. Must put up a couple of puzzles later today.

Unfortunately the description "Sonata no 6 in G by JS Bach" fits at least two pieces that immediately spring to mind. I think the description will need to be a little more exact (perhaps, though not necessarily, even with a BWV no.) for me to be happy to use the word "correct".

Baz

I shall have to pass on this one, I'm afraid. If anyone else would like to jump in and claim it, please feel free.

OK then: puzzle 489 is the sonata for violin and obbligato harpsichord by JS Bach, BWV 1019.  The third movement when the violinist gets to stand there feeling slightly awkward but enjoying listening (hopefully).

So much for my negative points.

Absolutely correct Strina. (I must admit that when I play it I actually enjoy feeling the violinist standing there doing - well - not much.Grin Grin)

Three more to sample:

Puzzle 492

Puzzle 493

Puzzle 494

Award yourself a pat on the back if you can identify the performer in puzzle 494.

494 - (and NOT being 'off topic') this is obviously Glenn Gould playing a piece by Bach (though which piece I have not yet determined). So is it a pat on the back. or a hammer on the head?

...So for 494 let's try Glenn Gould playing Bach's Prelude in D Major BWV 936.

Yes, sometimes known as Children's Games - The Top.

A pat on the back. You can probably hear him humming at the beginning.

Baz

Not that piece, I'm afraid.

It's not a prelude.  Sad

Well, A, I'll go for Bach's Toccata in D Major BWV912. Is that correct Tony?
