I have to agree with DB. I think more congregational singing, even in a non-ecclesiastical context, is good for the human psyche - vide the singing that used to happen (and I hope, still does) at foopball matches.

My mother (an entertainer all her life and lifelong member of Equity Roll Eyes) did quite a bit of television work at one time as an extra - walk-ons etc., and once she was in the congregation of the funeral in Brush Strokes of one of the main characters.  He'd requested "When father papered the parlour" to be played as it had been his all-time favourite song through life.  I forget how many takes she said it took to actually shoot the scene but everyone was in hysterics.  I'd like to do something like that for my funeral - everyone leaving with tears of laughter running down their faces.

I suppose it wouldn't happen at the real thing though  Sad

I think i would have to have some late Liszt.  Not sure what though as i think La Lugubre Gondola in any version is probably too long and miserable.
In that case you should hear the arrangement of it which a rather morbid Serbian friend of mine made for the Ives Ensemble, slowed down to crotchet = 46 and complete with bowed piano, Thai gongs and plate bells, and 'seagull' glissandos in the strings ...

You'll never walk alone sung badly by everyone is better than the Faure Requiem by the BBC Singers, in my mind.
I know what you're trying to say, but I'd actually pay not to hear the BBC Singers sing in a professional concert so it's possibly not the best example you've used.

Your future cemetery near a canal is it?

Jobsworth runs up as the cortège approaches the bankside...
'Ere! You can't do that! That's littering!

Burial at sea might be a very good option all round...
Be sure that all the jobsworths you know will be invited to the graveside ceremony <wicked grin>

I'll be having a funeral any day soon.....my beloved 16 yr old Jack Russell is gently dying. I wont be playing music though, she has been stone deaf for about 7 years, so isn't into it.

I do so sympathise!  I know what you're going through.  I lost my beloved Alfie at 13 years old last October and the heartache is immense. I have another beautiful dog now but we don't ever forget our dearly loved and departed pets.  I don't know what to say to make you feel better - in fact nothing will, will it?  I'll light a candle for her tonight - with a prayer to ease the passing over for you both. Jan, my sympathies too. I wasn't a pet owner until I got Mistress Martlepuss about 5 years ago (I don't count childhood pets), and the... very idea...    is unthinkable! Do you mind my asking her name?

Jan

I'm also sorry to hear about your Jack Russell. The only consolation is that in dog terms she has had a long life and you have made that life happy and contented. In return, she has given you memories.

My sympathies jan.

Our old President Hillary's funeral was on yesterday.  It was playing in the background in the office and went on all day.  Lots of typical irish church singing/tunes that I haven't heard in years.  Weird.

So in republics, the elected non-executive president is like a pet?
