My man was horrified when he startled the songthrush in the garden yesterday, and it flew "Bonk!" into the greenhouse glass...
Phew! today they're back up there singing themselves silly ....the thrush and my man.

Any bird that can "keep step with caterpillars" gets my awed admiration as well as love.

There are at this moment two ducks (mallards), male and female, sitting peacefully on my lawn

A cat has now joined the ducks. They all appear to be quite unbothered. I can't do anything else - I have to watch!

Gosh! Mallards taking up position on MabelJane's roof and now on Mary's lawn, Mort's communication system put out of operation. It's all very sinister. What's going on? Keep us posted, Mary. If your link to the outside world suddenly gets cut off we shall know to fear the worst.

Can you hear a clarinet playing somewhere in the background Mary?

No horns, luckily.

I've had a pair of ducks visiting my garden at this time every year for a few years now. Alfie, my last dog, used to lie down and just ignore them but unfortunately the day before yesterday, Dudley chased off the female before I could get out to stop him. He probably wouldn't have harmed her if he'd caught her, but he does have an inherent instinct to chase creatures that Alfie didn't have. Understandably, I haven't seen her since.

We saw some ducks on the canal yesterday evening, they appeared to be practising for attack formations (or looking for food, possibly)... I made up a silly script for them as they swam past us quacking.

The Greater Spotted Woodpecker reappeared today, haven't seen him since just before Christmas. He is so handsome!

The thing that surprised me about the ducks and the cat on my lawn was that they took so little notice of each other. The ducks sat in the middle of the lawn, ignoring the cat, which sat about two yards away, looking at them but not seeming at all predatory. Didn't the cat know that they were birds, or did he simply have the common sense to realise they were bigger than he was? The ducks weren't at all alarmed.

I once witnessed our big ginger cat Tigger strolling right past a mallard drake who'd been entertaining us for quite a while, waddling up and down the pavement, completely unbothered by the presence of a couple of cats. They seemed to have some sort of understanding that neither was predator nor prey.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.
