Here's a 5 minute snatch from this morning's dawn chorus here, replete with passing plane from Heathrow.

That's glorious, Bryn, much better than here, unless I slept through it.

Some little swifts:

When in doubt, wash.

Lovely, Bryn. Thank you.

A chaffinch was singing in a tree yesterday so I replied with our RSPB fur-fabric chaffinch but the real one wasn't impressed and didn't respond. His tune was slightly different so maybe he didn't recognise it. Birdsong does vary round the country though doesn't it.

There was a very exotic-looking bullfinch on the lawn this morning. He wouldn't look out of place in a tropical jungle.
He was even pinker than this:

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I have never seen a bullfinch! We don't seem to get them here.

Absolutely marvellous photo of the swifts, Mary. Such gorgeous expression in their faces. And isn't it amazing how the pattern of their beak/nose actually looks like a bird itself, in flight perhaps.

So it does! Thanks for pointing that out.

I didn't take the photo (wish I had) - I found it on Google Images.

Mary, I overslept so did not start the recording (all 2 hours 4 minutes  16 seconds of it) until about 04:40.

I might try again tomorrow, starting at, say, 03:30 and using only 16 bit quantization, rather than the 24 bit I used this morning. That should get me about 3 hours 6 minutes.

That 5 minute clip came from around 5 o'clock. No sign if either the Greater Spotted or Green Woodpecker in that clip, from what I heard. We certainly get visited by both species.

Anyway, come on you twitchers, how many, and which, species can you spot in that clip?

Hmm, maybe not tomorrow morning. Rain is forecast for around the time of the dawn chorus here tomorrow. That might not stop the birds, but I don't want my mics to get a soaking.

Come now, Bryn: do you really not know the standard trick for protecting mics in the wet? Wink

Not for large diaphragm condensers I don't. I suppose I could use the Sony S959 with suitable protectiveion. Wink

It does sound like it, I agree, but there were two doors and a window between the mics and me during those five minutes or so.
