Sounds horrific Mary.

Re backups: I use a pocket sized 80GB hard disc for backups. Plugs straight into a USB port, no power supply required. And they're pretty cheap - latest one I bought was £75.

Mary,

My condolences.  But very glad you are OK - that's what really matters.  "Stuff" can always be replaced (even knowledge).

Oh Mary, I am sorry. How horrible. I suppose people know how much distress they cause when they do this sort of thing. Maybe not.

Very relieved to hear you are OK though.

Poor MC! I am very sorry to hear about your unwanted visitor, and after hearing some of the stories circulating, very thankful that you weren't hurt. That you should be able to get online again soon is a consummation devoutly to be wished. And thank goodness your plastic was safe - I went frantic when mine was stolen.

My computer was stolen on Friday!!!! Rant! I was in the house, too, and must have missed the intruder by inches (thank Heaven). I was upstairs, with laptop, the alarm went off, (24-hour buzzer on spare room window), went down to turn alarm off, went back up, laptop had gone, all my cash (not credit cards!), spare bedroom window had been forced. All over in about 5 mins. Went to neighbour, house was stormed by about 7 policeman but intruder had fled.. Am so tired I don't know what I'm doing, on a friend's computer at moment but will not be around much for a while.

This happened about 7.15 pm.

Hi Mary, really sorry to hear about your misfortune. At least you weren't hurt, which I suppose is some consolation. Must be extremely upsetting. Do hope you can get some sleep and get a new computer soon. I know how upset I would be by all this.

Oh Mary.  How dreadful.  What is awful is knowing that someone has actually been in your home.  Very frightening indeed.  This is why I have a very big dog always as well as all the usual home security measures.  Anybody that broke into my house would not leave unscathed!  Have you thought about getting a dog at all?  Their hearing and sense of smell is so much more acute than ours that they would be able to detect an intruder probably almost immediately and usually if anyone strange appears anywhere in the vicinity (well mine anyway) they wouldn't need any encouragement to go and investigate and deal with the situation!  A large dog is better of course because a small one, although noisy and usually heroic is able to be kicked out of the way.  Something like the large, athletic,  muscular boy in my avatar would not be deterred in the same way at all.

Still at least you were not attacked.  I hope very much that they manage to catch the perpetrator, but if the police there are anything like the ones here, I wouldn't hold your breath. :-(

I'll just add my condolences, Mary, and hope that the shock doesn't hit you as a delayed reaction...

Mary.  I'm really sorry that you have had this horrible experience.  It's never pleasant to have an intruder even if they don't take anything but to have your computer taken is dreadful.  I hope that you can find another quickly and get back here to join with your friends.    Take care, and perhaps a dog, a confidence booster, is a good idea.

Mary, It is dreadful to have something like that happen to you. Somebody tried to get inside our house when we went for a walk through the back window. They broke the window (first one in double glazing) but did not get inside the house. I felt absolutely sick. I hope you recover your bearings quickly. A big dog sounds good to me too, though it takes a lot of dedication and commitment to train it and to take care of it.

Just read your posting, Mary, what a horrible thing to happen. It's really sickening to hear about things like this, and deeply distressing when it happens to you. Our little cyber-community is thinking of you and wishing you well. All the best.

Hello Mary, I'll just add my condolences too. To know that the intruder was in the house with you must be so distressing.  Very best wishes.

Sympathy from me too Mary.
A similar thing happened to me a while ago, but a few little extra bits of security on the windows (not expensive) and it has all been okay since then. Perhaps sit back with the Britten Michelangelo Sonnets with Graham and Anthony Rolfe Johnson and a glass of your favourite something? I do think treating yourself helps you get over some of the after-event feelings.
