Is this the thread to grump about computers?

Current grump is the message appearing on the top blue bar/header;

Windows Internet Explorer (Not responding)

I guess it's what's termed a 'crash'. Happens everyday now on this dektop, often when I'm on here and just clicked a link, but also happens on yahoo, amazon in fact randomly anywhere when I click a link. Page just freezes.

I have XP, BT Broadband, Norton 2006, IE v.7.0.6000.16574

The XP has worked fine for two years, using the multiple tab/window feature freely. The Norton has had 2nd year update (NAV, NortonSystemWorks) but the crash problem started before the last Norton update. Defrags done and the Norton operates fixes etc.

I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete but not clicked 'Send Report' yet. Why does IE crash? Shall I send report or visit their help pages?

John

When I get that I always send Error Report

You can see what the Error is and how it can be fixed

It's usually some patch you need to upload

Or else Bill Gates asking for money

John, I get similar problems but I'm using Firefox with XP. I suspect it's to do with the tabbed browsing starting to hog resources, especially CPU, when you've got lots of tabs open. It's particularly common I find with the new Yahoo mail or Googlemail. I can usually tell when it happens because the CPU fan starts racing and I find that Firefox is using at least 50% of CPU time - plus it either doesn't respond or is very slow. Shut your browser down and start again. Browsers have to retain a massive amount of information to enable you to go back, restart after a crash etc, so all this processing is probably overloading your machine.

Edit: thought I'd lost all that but fortunately it's posted OK Smiley - r3ok problem, not Firefox. I would guess that sending an error report to MS is slightly less use than asking the fairies at the bottom of the garden.

Now that's a bit unfair isn't it Andy?

It's MUCH LESS USE than asking the fairies at the bottom of your garden. At least the fairies are your friends.

Ollie's right. After we got an HP camera and installed the necessary HP bits and bobs to get the pictures back from it we started getting error messages whenever somebody switched account rather than logging off. After about 3 years of sending error reports to Microsoft, the site no longer gives us back irritating messages saying that "no solution could be found for this problem. Contact the manufacturer".

Must be somebody finally got around to reading one of the "error reports".

Sittiing here with my ginger tea as I type, Anna. Yes I am meant to be working today but, at the moment, just getting to the end of the road looks unlikely. Curses!

I might join you with the ginger tea Mort, I'm not feeling too bright today either.  I should be going to our Christmas lunch today <groan emoticom> at a hostelry where the food is indifferent and the atmosphere non-existent  Undecided  The thought of being stuck with the Bozo Partners for 5 hours is definitely not appealing and I may very well give it a miss ........

aaaaaaaaaahflyingouttomorrowchecked....aaaaaaaaaah

*blinks*

*deep breaths*

aaah....flying out to cairo tomorrow; last nightdecided to check my bank balance to see how much money I'd be able take out with me...can you guess what the balance was?  FIFTY EURO (which I have to spend on several thing, such as a ... haircut ...).

BUGGER!

But not too much...I have enough cash/&c. on me that I can get myself through and out of the airport in cairo, whereupon I'll be able to borrow money off my dad, but THIS WAS NOT MEANT TO HAPPEN.

Also, I was totally not able to find my ticket details, or any emails about my tickets, in spite of a several-hour search yesterday. Thankfully though I got a confirmation email from air France this morning, so that's one thing less to worry about.

I expect this was due to the non-payment of my december-wage owing to my disappearance off the academic map over the past month (on that note: going to arrange for a time out for six months, do the psychologist thing, and reassess my position then; it's quite unsatisfying and frustrating in some ways as I was rather looking forward to making a complete break, but...it's the rational thing to do, so!), but I'll print out my statement today anyway, just to make sure I wasn't fucked over by thieves again.
