Thanks! But I feel that I should clarify that there should have been at least one  Wink after my comments quoted above!
I was trying to be funny...  Undecided

OMG!! Why O why did I have to pick Newcastle to follow!! What angst they put their fans through. I wish I could get to support Arsenal. One of the nearest Prem teams out. At least they are doing well now and gave Wenger the time to put his team together. I dont know why we got rid of Big Sam. The management bowing to pressure from the fans. If they are not careful, it would be the fans that will get the team into more trouble.

As you probably heard/saw the gate was well down, Keegan seeing that he has a big motivation task ahead-do you think he'll last the 3 years of his contract?

Its a case of wait and see, I think. Its a huge mountain to cross. There mkust have been some undercurrent that we dont know why as to Sam Allardyce's departure. Wait and see, yeah?

Right. One thing they could do PR-wise I reckon, if not already, would be to host the local womens' team to whom Sir John wossname when chairman refused stadium time. Mort modestly neglects to mention her legendary performances with Highgate Wanderers.

Talking about womens' football, there is also womens' rugby and their Six Nations is taking place now.   Not a mention of it anywhere in the Press I see!  Although I am not sure I approve of women playing rugby.

Ha!  The very thought!  No the best sport is mud-wrestling and Mort and I have had many a frenzied bout fighting over dear George - wherever he is now. Cry

Hmmmmmmm.... not exactly a rant this one, more of an exasperated "why me?" howled to the full moon...

...  I dash back from a "visa renewal" session* in London ready to jump on a train down to the Stavropol Krai with the sets and costumes for a co-production there (of a show we've already done in Moscow, but with their soloists and orchestra)...  and news comes that there's been a fire at the theatre, all shows are cancelled, please don't come as there's nowhere even to store your sets, "we'll be in touch".

Oh well, that was a pity, but worse to follow. Before leaving for London I'd been asked to stage a series of six one-act operas for Moscow Philharmonia,  and we agreed that I'd pop in to sign the contract as soon as I got back.  Unfortunately, the lady there who had devised the idea and invited me to do them has died of cancer whilst I've been away for a week. Sad   She was only about 55, and one of the most innovative and creative Programming Directors they had - she will be sadly missed.

* hopefully my last, as I've now clocked-up enough time to qualify for a temporary green card... so at least some good news...

Does this mean Moscow will never get the chance to see your interpretation of Cox and Box?

(Very sorry about the Programming Director.)

Ah, Reiner. :/

(I remember, in bed this morning, I composed quite a meticulous 'grumpy old rant room' post in my head.  But I can't recall for the life of me what it was about now ... )

I don't really know if the series of shows I am/was supposed to do is affected... we don't have a Contract on paper Sad  I hope they might still be interested, although it was very much Valentina Kondratenko's idea,  and she was the person who had steered it through to being ready for go-ahead.  I very much hope we'll be able to do them as a vindication of her foresight and innovation - in her own words "I want you to do stuff that's not known here and badly deserves a play... don't worry about houses, that's my job".  You don't meet many like that these days, and she'll be sadly missed.  It was that same faith of hers that "innovative programming fills houses" that put on THE FAIRY QUEENE we did two years ago...  first perf in Moscow.

Most recently (just two weeks ago) she put on a lute recital of entirely unknown works (in which I got involved booking a replacement artist when the original one became unavailable) - that was the kind of person she was, and as usual she was right...  an 80% attendance for a program in which not one of the composers was known to the audience was really not bad at all Wink

Poor Reiner! You have my sympathy. At least you didn't lose the cozzies and sets to the fire.

And I'm sorry to hear that you have lost a courageous and forward-thinking colleague. My own experience of the arts world has been that Good Eggs are hard to find; I still remember fondly the Studio Director of BHS who interviewed me as a newly-minted student. He made it clear to me within five minutes that I wouldn't get the job, but spent the next thirty to forty-five minutes giving me information and encouragement.

And of course, there are one or two Good Eggs here, too.  Lips sealed

Reiner, on top of the fire that's a terrible loss-sounds like she was working away enthusiastically to the end, not wanting to be a bother to anyone. Dis she have a protege who can pick up the reins? I was meaning to ask you about the operas of Osctrcil (brief orchestral work on R3 last week seemed to bode well) which are the kind of the thing I guess she'd have been promoting.

Thanks Smiley  She was indeed working up to the end - she was in her office two days before, checking artwork on some season posters.

I'm afraid I had to Google poor old Odstrcil, and Wiki has nothing on him at all. What's his stuff like?  I am always a sucker for new stuff,  although much of it ends up on my  "for-staging-when-a-true-philanthropist-is-found" list Sad
