At t-p's request..... the 'other' Larkin mowing poem:

The mower stalled, twice: kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.

I had seen it before, and even fed it, once.
Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

I love this poem. I feel the same as Larkin about the subject. We never know what our actions lead to.
The first day after a death, the new absence is always the same.
I feel this poem is a little like Japanese poetry I once read. I don't remember the author, but it was similar.

Lovely poem, George, I hadn't seen it before. Cant stop crying now, it has set me off. Cry Cry Cry

(I should probably be onthe "Life's upsets and challenges" thread today, but not enough energy to get there...)

x Jan x

I'll go back and look at the Muppet photos, that may lighten my spirit.

Tommo,

I`m kind of inbetween the Happy Room and the Grump Room with this one. The grass that No Longer Is, stares accusingly at me every time I look out of the window, but ......... I discovered the Highgate Garden Centre yesterday, fabulous herb selection. And I came home and hurled money at Dobies! Hopefully today I will get my paws on some grass seed. Profligate Mort, tsk, tsk.

All my life I am between grumpy room and happy room and I figure it is up to me where I am in each given moment.

In my experience a little bit of seeds and good compost solve all grass problems.
This site explain why grass becomes brown and then there are patches. http://images.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=http://www.lawncare-business.com/DSCN1192.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.lawncare-business.com/Brown-Patches-Lawn-Care.html&h=300&w=400&sz=55&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=XKIajABQKytuVM:&tbnh=93&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgrass%2Bproblems%2Bpatches%2Band%2Bcure%2B%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26channel%3Ds%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26sa%3DG

Mort - I've just spent £20 on seeds at Clifton Nurseries.  Can't wait to get to my pots and trays tomorrow!

Cornflowers and Larkspurs, etc. but most interesting are Cerinthe and Cigar Plant

Oh dear. Sorry Jan (Msg 684). I know that feeling. It wasn't meant to do that.

Rowlf has asked to serenade you in the hope it might cheer you up a bit.

I really like the way that poem teeters between pathos and bathos.
I have a different reaction to it each time I read it.

I'm getting a cold.
