Mary, perhaps we should form the Radio Three Alternative Board Temperance Ladies Forum? Like you, I don't like the taste (or the effect) of alcohol in drinks. I am much happier with non-alcoholic beverages.

Hildegard von Bingen:

"Wein ist Medizin, Bier ist ein Getränk und Wasser ist zum Waschen".

(Wine is medicine, beer is for drinking and water is for washing)

Not Hildegard von Bingen:

"Wasser ist zum Waschen da, falldarie und falldara,
auch zum Zähneputzen, kann man es benutzen.
Wasser braucht das liebe Vieh, falldara und falldarie
und auch die Feuerwehr, benötigt Wasser sehr."

(Water is for washing...
you can also clean your teeth with it.
The dear old animals need it...
And the fire brigade needs it a lot.)

I've read before that civilization was built on beer -- not a joke, a serious historical theory! It was the discovery of brewing/fermenting in the fertile crescent of the Middle East that provided a safe way of drinking water, leading to lower mortality rates and therefore an environment that allowed advances in civilization.

Here's to civilization! Hic!  Tongue  Embarrassed

Bit of a Catch 22, isn't it? Cheesy  In order to create civilisation it is a necessary condition that everyone has to be continuously drunk. And if everyone is continuously drunk no one can really be bothered to create a civilisation.

...or as Alex Glasgow sang (I sometimes feel the need to quote/sing this in bad news-type meetings)

'... The moment this pub closes... the revolution starts'

Sounds like another of God's little jokes, like 'The meek shall inherit the earth'.
('We'd really rather not, thank you. Can't someone else inherit it instead?')

For a (nearly) teetotaller, I do seem to know a few drinking songs!

In the midst of attempting to sort through things at my mother`s house earlier today, I came across a bottle of 40 year old Greek brandy. Perfect companion for my cup pf coffee Grin

Autoharp,

I have never been so insulted in my life!  Grin Grin

I have tried to find an image for Botrys brandy but, alas, have failed. You`ll just have to track some down yourself and test drive it......
