And before it there's a Concertgebouw/Monteux Ravel Daphnis, and prior to that the Shostakovich G minor Piano Quintet, Op. 57...A job for the hard drive, methinks.

Bother - missed it. And on my Birthday too, would have made the perfect present. Anyone tape it?

Tam, Sorry I missed your birthday, but I'll add it (hard drive from FM, not taped) to the other things I've promised you, plus something unexpected that I know you'll just love: I'll get round to it before very long...
Many tardy happies! Ron

Ron - surely no apology necessary (after all you didn't even no). But many thanks to you both.
Opilec, I had no idea there is a commercially available recording - in which case, Ron, you don't need to add that to the others, as I'll probably just buy it.

This link has just been posted at the other place, announcing that Hyperion are shortly releasing the Mackerras Beethoven cycle recorded at last year's EIF: http://www.theherald.co.uk/features/features/display.var.1586389.0.0.phpSomething to look forward to!

Hyperion, gawd bless'em, have certainly picked themselves up after the Sawkins affair, and continue to go for the jugular in their releases. Hope it makes them a fortune!

IGI, I never thought I'd see the day when my rather abstruse collection contained two Beethoven cycles, less still two by the same conductor, but here goes.... thanks!

Excellent news - it will be interesting to hear what the sound quality is like - the broadcasts did poor service to the musicians.
Price seems a touch steep too, given what the EMI set goes for, still, mustn't grumble.
I wonder if the discs will be in numerical order or in the order the works were presented in concert? And, more to the point why Hyperion are not busy crowing about this on their website.

I suppose you're right about the price. Thinking about it, it's roughly the same as the recent Haitink on LSO live.
I believe that McMaster originally planned for them to be in order (as the Bruckner symphonies were) but Mackerras insisted on putting them out of order. In the end we got: 3, 2, 5, 6, 4, 7, 8, 1, 9. I think the idea was to put the smaller works between the larger ones to make rehearsal more realistic and make the endeavour less exhausting.
Actually, it was in some respects a fascinating way to hear them as it showed nicely what, for example the 5th built on from the 2nd and 3rd in a way I'm not sure would have been so apparent if they had been in sequence.
