I'm going out now because Mr Brendel has agreed to allow me to take one photograph of him at 6pm. With just one try, I hope I hold the camera steadily enough so that I don't get a blurred photo. Perhaps I can talk him into two...

Tony, did you remember to ask for a list of silent restaurants around the world?

I would prefer silent restaurants all together. People writing what they want to order. No arguying between themselves and waiters etc, If they don't have restaurants like this they should have them: Complete silence: you are entering silence zone, turn back while you can. No talking after this point etc.

Tony, does AB still play with bits of scotch tape on his fingertips? I know he used to (he has very sensitive skin, apparently). I'd hate the inevitable 'clicky' sound they would produce when hitting the keys though...

I managed to take two photos in the end: He did not play with sticky tape on his fingers, even during rehearsal. But he did want a keyboard to run his fingers over in his dressing room. He was happy to accept any old upright or electronic keyboard. Those sitting near the front were intrigued by his use of the pedals, though, especially the left/soft pedal during a concert of Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Mozart. As for restaurants, he went to a nearby Italian one after the concert (he likes Italian). The owners had agreed to turn down the piped music but it wasn't going to be completely silent. Not got much time at the moment but might post more tonight. A wonderful evening.

Wonderful pictures, Tony! Many thanks for sharing. Brendel perfomed in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam last year. During the recital, he suddenly stopped playing and shouted to the public: "If you don't stop coughing, I will stop playing!" My kind of man!

My thanks too Tony, nice photos! So often it's far more interesting to see amateur photos of well-known people rather than all the agency-approved stuff. .Brendel perfomed in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam last year. During the recital, he suddenly stopped playing and shouted to the public: "If you don't stop coughing, I will stop playing!" My kind of man! Friedrich Gulda apparently once turned to his audience before a recital and called them 'stinking reactionaries'.

Was this in Vienna?

I saw Brendel play Beethoven 4th concerto in the (open-sided) Music Shed at Tanglewood once. It was a hot, humid summer and the mosquitos were out in force. At least three times, one landed on Brendel's forehead. Each time he managed to swat it with his hand without missing a single note! Very impressive. And funny.

A similar story happened with Andras Schiff playing Schumann in Berkeley, California. I wish more musicians had such courage!

And also at an Edinburgh Festival recital in the Usher Hall where he left the platform and said he would come back and carry on if and when people quietened down. As it happens I was at an Andras Schiff concert last night (Bartok). We were as quiet as mice. Fear probably though I suppose it might have had something to do with the quality of the playing as well. Great pictures, Tony. Look forward to hearing more about the concert as and when you are ready.
