A not quite shameless  Roll Eyes but at least brief plug?

http://www.festwochen.at/index.php?id=79&L=1&detail=166

(In case it leaves you wondering: no, I'm not Nicola Jürgensen.)

Has there ever been a better name for a musician than "Marco Blaauw, trumpet"?
Are you punning there, Member, er, Johnson?  Wink

The ensemble "notes inégales" at the ICA, featuring a green pianist, on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th

A little 'bump' for this, for anyone in the south east finding themselves at a loose end tomorrow or Friday (and not at the Nono on Friday). Having given the greater part of last weekend and today (a 'warm-up' concert in Denmark Hill) to this project, I can confidently predict that you will be wowed by all these players (with the exception perhaps of the green pianist, whose hands seem hopelessly addicted to Bill Evans). If you thought the tuba was a dull instrument, for instance (BBM please take note), I can recommend the experience of hearing Oren Marshall making it sound variously like a drain, birdsong, a piccolo, a tempest, badly-tuned AM radio, a lion and the funkiest bass instrument known to man.

A second 'little bump' if I may since it is second house at the ICA tonight.

Had a great time at the first sitting last night. Hugely enjoyable and strongly recommended. Eleven ridiculously skilful and creative musicians each giving their affectionate all to a collective enterprise with Peter Wiegold acting as a magical Prospero figure. What more could you want?

Very good to see you there, George - Richard, too.  Smiley If it's half as much fun to witness as it is to perform, it's money well spent, I reckon.

Seconded with brass knobs on. If I hadn't already bought tickets for the Nono at the RFH months ago I think I'd be heading off to the ICA again. I find it difficult to dscribe to anyone exactly what this project consists of (except that Miles aficionados will hear some familiar snippets from time to time) because the way Peter has conceived and realised it doesn't really owe much to anyone else's idea of what a composer or conductor or performer does. I felt I was not just listening to music but seeing and hearing how music is made - I've known Peter as teacher, composer and latterly colleague for almost 30 years now and I'm still getting new insights and perspectives from him, I mean from his approach and relationship to music.

Not to diminish anyone else's contribution of course!  Smiley

Richard, what time did the ICA event finish last night, and do you think it is likely to end about the same time tonight? (Just thinking of my last bus back).

Something like 9.30-9.40 I seem to remember. I have an idea tonight might be a tad longer, but not much.

That should be fine then. My last bus leaves Victoria at 22:30. So that's RFH at 18:15, then quickly over to the ICA for the main event. (I was considering getting a £9 ticket for tonight's Prometeo, but as I am going tomorrow night, and have the Col Legno SACDs, I think the ICA would be the better option tonight.)

Bryn, can't think why tonight's concert should necessarily be any longer than last night's - although it's difficult to predict with an event that's largely free-improv. The collective feeling amongst the performers was that last night was about the right length, finishing at 9.40.

Guys, I was cream crackered but I'm so glad I  made it-brilliant work by thaty Butler Guy essaying MJQ stylings in continuo I thought.
I see at least part if the gig was dvd'd-I hope it makes it to cd -scores and performance, with maybe a bit more swing from the woodwinds, stupendous imho. Notwithstandinmg the excelent trumpet/flugel lead, I fancied I heard Miles soloing away off in the ether somewhere. I have to find a way to be awake enough to converse next time.
Cheers Mart and anyone else around.

Marbs, glad you enjoyed it. It was indeed DVD'd (try saying that fast) and I heard some of the 'raw', unmixed recording on Friday night - really excellent audio quality, so material will be available in some shape or form at some point.

A busy patch for Tommo......

Tuesday 13 May to Saturday 17 May, "Crazy for You" (Gershwin) at the Anvil, Basingstoke.  Sadly just 1 violin , 1 cello and 1 bass in the string section, with lots of wind and synthesisers.  But from the dress tonight, quite a laugh of a show.  I'm sorry to say that, for a few of the numbers at least, I was reminded of the closing scenes of Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles.   (How did that song go?).  And the last scenes of this show will put a smile on many a (male) face in the audience.... Wink Brilliant music - just soooooo happy!  Anyway, details here.

And on Sunday 18 May, at Leighton Park School in Reading (for FREE!) you can here 4 new works in rehearsal.

Torbjörn Hultmark     Alcántara for trumpet and chamber orchestra
John Marlow Rhys    And the Mountains are Dancing …. are Dancing
Nicholas Gotch    Fadensonnen
Roger May    Flight to the Iolite

The 'winning' entry will be played again on 22 June.  Details are here

Finally, I am really looking forward to playing Schoenberg's 1st Chamber Symphony (15 players) and (not quite so much) to Wagner's Siegfried Idyll (original version for 13 players) at St James' Piccadilly at lunchtime on Friday 23 May.  The details are here and here.

Then I might have a beer.....    Roll Eyes

Tommo

One of the entrants at Leighton Park is an old mate of mine so I hope to pop down from the smoke. Should be good stuff.

A quick plug for a couple of things...

The Academy of Ancient Music is playing a rather nice programme in Inverness (20 May), Durham (21 May) and Beverley (24 May), directed by Pavlo Besnoziuk with oboist Frank de Bruine:

Handel    Concerto Grosso in F major Op.6 No.2 HWV320
Vivaldi    Concerto in B flat major for oboe and violin
Benda      Concerto in D minor for violin
Albinoni  Concerto in D minor for oboe Op.9 No.2
Handel    Concerto Grosso in A minor Op.6 No.4 HWV322
JS Bach     Concerto in C minor for oboe and violin BWV1060

Later in London, The Temple Festival is presenting Dido and Aeneas on 4, 6 and 7 June at Middle Temple Hall (a fantastically evocative space - Twelfth Night was premiered there!) with the Temple Players (led by yours truly) and the following cast:

Louise Winter  Dido
Andrew Rupp   Aeneas
Elin Manahan Thomas   Belinda
Robin Blaze     Sorceress
Simon Wall     Sailor

James Vivian      music director
David Edwards    director
Colin Mayes        designer
You-Ri Yamanaka movement director
