"nom-nomno-nom-no-no-nomnom, no-nomnom" is what you're saying there, I believe...

Don't know what you were saying, hh, but the Duke of Edinburgh in the background appears to be asking N.O.: "What's that on your head then? A toupée?"

I was up close and personal with Nigel as well, just five days ago as it happens, and I can confidently assert that it's not a toupee (not that I yanked at it or anything, you understand). It's just a really, really bad hairstyle.  Roll Eyes

He's still got it all though martle, even if he doesn't know what to do with it! And in what I assume is its original colour too. I can vaguely remember what it was like to have that much hair Cry

Glad the concert went well hh.

Another emerging slaphead writes:

Yes, he has. And it's a fine head of hair for a 60-year-old.  Sad

Bugler.  I was in Paris last night.  My record of missing board-related events continues.   Sad

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Last night, the first of this season's visits by the Scottish Ensemble to Dundee:

       Scottish Ensemble
Alison Balsom, trumpet
Alasdair Beatson, piano

      Tomaso Albinoni
Concerto for trumpet and strings in D minor

       Dmitry Shostakovich
Chamber Symphony in C minor, Op110a

       Arcangelo Corelli
Concerto Grosso No 11 in B flat, Op 6

       Dmitry Shostakovich
Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings in C minor, Op 35

An auspicious start to their season, with the Shostakovich concerto particularly outstanding: it was quite obvious from the faces of the (conductorless) ensemble that this performance was catching fire as it went, the capricious Beatson discovering nuances and exploiting the outrageous nature of the work's excesses in a very spontaneous way. The Albinoni 'concerto' is an arrangement of a violin sonata and played on a piccolo trumpet, for those who are puzzled. A generous encore in the form of Piazzolla's Libertango, played by everyone, with Alison Balsom's trumpet worth absolutely breathtaking (for the audience and her).  The same programme can be seen in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen (having already played Perth) and then at Wigmore Hall on October 9th.

Here's a bit of advance warning:

7.30pm, Friday 28 November 2008
Recital Room, South Hill Park, Bracknell

Perseus Trio

Haydn                                   Piano Trio in A (Hoboken XV:18)
Ireland                                  Phantasie (Trio No.1)
Schoenberg arr. Steuermann     Verklarte Nacht

Tommo

I have learnt from the trio members that they fully intend to repeat this programme in London, when a suitable venue and date can be arranged.  They may also go to other areas.  That might be of interest to anyone not in the Bracknell region who was interested in coming.

I've just got back from tonight's BCMG concert which had this programme:

Magnus Lindberg: Bubo bubo
Magnus Lindberg: Counter Phrases
Poul Ruders: Four Dances in One Movement
Poul Ruders: Nightshade
Magnus Lindberg: Joy

conducted by Oliver Knussen

Enjoyed it very much, especially so because I haven't been to any live music over the summer, hearing this concert on the radio would have been nowhere near as good. I didn't think I'd be able to make it, as I was planning to go somewhere today, but things conspired against me Sad

Were any of the esteemed board membership in attendance at the Wigmore tonight for the Academy of Ancient Music's Gibbons/Dido programme?

There's a reprise at Cambridge's West Road Concert Hall tomorrow (Thur 9 Oct) if anyone in the area is interested.

 Just back from the first concert in the RSNO's 08-09 Dundee Season;

Beethoven   Leonore Overture No3
Beethoven   Piano Concerto No2
R Strauss   Rosenkavalier Suite
R Strauss   Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks

Stéphane Denève (Conductor)
Paul Lewis (Piano)

Apart from the Beethoven concerto (Lewis absolutely superb) not an auspicious beginning: Denève is excellent in French repertoire, but his Strauss was decidedly unidiomatic, lacklustre and just plain noisy in places: Eulenspiegel sounded curiously reminiscent of Janáček at times. Really wish they'd let their young assistant, the Austrian David Danzmayr, conduct instead: on previous showing this repertoire would have been right up his Straße.

Next concert perhaps more promising: conductor laureate Neeme Järvi returns to Dundee for the first time this century with a programme including the Sibelius Violin Concerto and Prokofiev 5.

Been to hear Noszferatu at Cheltenham, part of the BMIC's Cutting Edge series. They're very good, I've heard them play several times - though they've lost Darragh Morgan as he's now with the Smiths. Their programme was not really like that advertised by the promoters or that advertised by the BMIC - but who cares? enjoyable none the less.

My mistake, the BMIC does have the programme correct (perhaps they updated it since I last looked?), so I've been able to copy and paste, couldn't be bothered to type it out last night.

Andrew Poppy — How the Hammers Felt
Donnacha Dennehy —Paddy
Joe Cutler — Sikorski B
Jakob ter Veldhuis — Grab It!
Jonathan Powell — Drempel
Paul Newland — Trance
Michel van der Aa — Just Before
Howard Skempton — In Tandem
Dave Price — Lee Games 2

The friend I went with reckoned the music was closer to jazz than contemporary classical music but I'm not sure it matters what you call it. I know that Finn Peters (sax, flute) plays music from many genres, including jazz.

Sorry, no.  They kindly sent out a Facebook reminder of the Cambridge gig today, but nothing about the London one (and it would have menat being out every night this week - and it's not even the Proms season).

That may be because the Wigmore was sold out and Cambridge wasn't.  But if you're free next Wednesday we're doing it again at the Beijing Concert Hall!   Wink

And I apologise for not being more on-the-ball about publicising it here - it's been a mad couple of weeks...
