Julietta's a fabulous piece, strange (undoubtedly) but full of magic (the opening of Act 2 particularly). Did you ever see the New Opera Co.'s production conducted by Mackerras at the Coli around the same time I was treading its boards, GG?

Quite brilliant production. I treasure my less than perfect reel-to-reel recording of the broadcast performance from that production. I can still see in in my minds eye, too. I was kindly donated a ticket by the chap who used to run Orchesography.

Someone who unfortunately is George Garnett writes sadly:

Unfortunately I didn't see it, Ron, not even once. I do have a distant recollection of kicking myself about not going at the time but that's not quite the same thing is it Undecided .

Did anyone else here capture the broadcast performance? I was living a bit too close to the Crystal Palace transmitter at the time and the BBC's 405 line VHF television transmissions used to lend a nasty buzz to everything on Radio 3, plus the tuner I then had, was a bit noisy anyway.

I"m not sure on that one, Bryn: I have a feeling that the production had two runs, and that I was around for the second and not the first, which was the one broadcast: without doing a deal of digging around in the stores I can't be positive, but I have a nagging suspicion that I only ever had the Supraphon LPs - and now the CDs.

Mackerras did Greek Passion with WNO, and some of the orchestral works in concert, as well as recording both that opera and several pieces for Supraphon.

There's also a 2008/9 season in Scotland (though the Edinburgh seasons have suffered a bit of a mauling due to uncertainty about the Usher Hall's availability - the RSNO still haven't published theirs here).

RSNO

SCO

BBC SSO

Thanks for that, Tam. Once again apart from the RSNO, Dundee's left pretty much alone by the Scottish orchestras: not much more available in Perth, either.

But Ron, you ARE getting Mackerras in Perth and we are not (feel free to gloat). They have offered us a but ride out which I think I'll take them up on (I met a music critic from the FT on Thursday who said it was a nice hall).

Most of my concert going this year was focussed on the SCO and a rather ambitious attempt to attend their entire season (though due to illness, people scheduling weddings in such a way that they clashed, and dreadful acoustic at St Cuthbert's church I haven't quite managed that). I find a lot of impressive stuff in the RSNO programme and will go to a lot of it if I can (which may necessitate the train to Glasgow). Ditto the BBC SSO (though someone I spoke to from the orchestra on Thursday said they would like to come to Edinburgh more - the trouble is that there isn't an ideal venue an the Usher Hall, even when it's up and running is a little too large for any of the more adventurous programmes they do (the audiences here can be rather conservative).

The RSNO's Dundee season this last year was an absolute cracker, Tam: great programme and every concert really enjoyable. Sadly next season's prospectus isn't anything like as enterprising: I'll still be going, but not with the same degree of anticipation. Tonight will be my first visit to the Perth Concert Hall - Steve Reich's Drumming - so I'll get the measure of it then. Dundee's Caird Hall is a very fine sounding shoe-box which the orchestra, conductors and soloists enjoy playing: the comment's made at virtually every concert.

Ah, but this is more up my street, perhaps:

              Scottish Ensemble.

Also playing the other five cities with the same programme.

There's also the enterprising East Neuk Festival in Fife: the Skampas playing the Suk Meditation plus both Janáčeks looks like a humdinger: to be recorded by R3 for transmission, too, so if you can't make it, you'll not miss out.

Just received the prospectus for the next season of subscription concerts at the Gateshead Sage.

It's the 50th anniversary of the Northern Sinfonia and their season is starting with a Beethoven symphony cycle.  We can't make all the relevant concerts so we're going on Sat 11 Oct to hear 8 and 9.

The St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra are coming to play popular Elgar and Tchaikovsky over 2 nights, Wed 15 and Thurs 16 Oct.  I'll be fascinated to hear a Russian orchestra play Enigma.  It'll be the first time that I've been to the Sage on consecutive nights.

The RLPO will be there on Wed 3 Dec for Rach Concerto 3 and Rimsky's Sheherazade and the Halle are coming but I can't remember the details of their programme off hand.

Mrs W is very keen to attend Mendelssohn's Elijah on Sun 19 April (Low Sunday!).

You should find more on the Sage website.

Ian.

The Hallé has just published its 2008-2009 prospectus. There are some interesting concerts including a Nielsen symphony cycle shared with the CBSO in January 2009. Oliver Knussen is conducting a programme of Britten, Matthews, Knussen and Schumann whilst Mark Elder is tackling a concert performance of Gotterdammerung over two nights in May. Sadly, there's no contemporary music except for Matthews and Knussen. You'd think with Elliott Carter turning 100 in December we could have had at least one small piece to mark the occasion. Manchester audiences are so conservative.

Now if I'd had the chance I would have put on a Messiaen/Carter marathon covering December 10 and 11 Smiley (Conducted by Karajan and Ančerl perhaps although there are two slight problems there.)

I remember when the Barbican had their Messiaen weekend, around 8-9 years ago, I think. Between Friday and Sunday, one heard La Nativité, Vingt Regards, Turangalila, Quartet for the End of Time, a large selection from the Catalogue, La Transfiguration, Des Canyons, Éclairs, and quite a bit else. All wonderful works on their own, but this quantity produced massive overkill - I never wanted to hear another added-sixth chord again by the end, and I was ready to take a shotgun to any bird that came into the vicinity.
