I went to York, 1996-99, and our chancellor at the time was one Dame Janet Baker. I can claim to have performed with her, as she narrated our (York University Chamber Choir's) performance of RVW's Oxford Elegy. On graduation day she and the VC took it in turns to give out batches of degrees. I was horrified to think that it might not be her who gave me mine but fortunately my group was in one of her batches OK, back on topic re: the Durham Concerto. I hadn't read anything about this but it sounds interesting - I was born and raised in Durham...

The concert was last night and I quite enjoyed it I've put a review on my web site: http://www.heroes.force9.co.uk/music/lord-2007.html As usual, it was written for Deep Purple fans so please make allowances The concerto has its own web site where there are some (very short) clips of the music, for anyone that's interested in listening: http://www.durhamconcerto.com (the clips start playing automatically, which I always find quite annoying).

That bit on the website sounds rather like Malcolm Arnold to me. Is that typical of the style of the piece?

Lord has always cited Arnold as an influence and I think it is very noticable in places, but I heard a lot of different influences in different parts of the piece -- Arnold, Sibelius, Vaughn Williams, and probably others.
I think Lord is very much a "20th century" composer and he certainly doesn't claim to be breaking new ground, just writing what he loves.

Lord has always cited Arnold as an influence It's an unlikely kind of influence for a rock musician to have though, isn't it? Maybe not. I don't know much Arnold really. I didn't hear any Deep Purple influence in that clip though!

As Jon points out, he was a jazz musician before he was a rock musician and a classical musician before he was a jazz musician... Arnold conducted Lord's first full orchestral work in 1969 (and his second in 1970) and they struck up a friendship from then. Whether Lord was a fan before that I'm not certain.

Richard, the Concerto for Group and Symphony Orchestra has been issued on DVD-A, no less. I picked up a copy in an MVC closing down sale (£1.99). There's also a DVD Video: The DVD-A also includes Arnold's 6th Symphony. Whether that is also on the DVD Video, I do not know.

£1.99 If I could find it for that price, I would buy it just for for 6th symphony! The DVD video doesn't have Arnold's 6th symphony. Also, the Concerto itself has a rather lengthy cut in the first movment (bloody BBC ) so if you want the full piece you're better off getting the CD (or presumably DVD-A) version. Though the DVD has the option of hearing the composer's commentary over the footage, which I find quite interesting. 1970's Gemini Suite for rock Group and Orchestra wasn't released on LP as far as I know but the tapes resurfaced a few years ago and a CD version was released. It might be a bit hard to find these days.

£1.99 If I could find it for that price, I would buy it just for for 6th symphony! I have to admit that for me it was a bit of a pig in a poke. I had no idea what to expect (I had never knowingly heard Deep Purple). It's still got the big round £1.99 sticker on the case. Also include are "Hush", "Wring That Neck" and "Child in Time". Oh, and a three minute documentary video. I have to eject the disc, reset the DVD priority to DVD Video and re-insert the disc to play that. "Wring That Neck" currently playing. Not really my cup of tea, but the Arnold is worth having. Now if only I could find a decent copy of the Zappa/Mehta 200 Motels concert bootleg on CD ... . Used to have it on red vinyl (bought in the original Virgin Shop above a shoe shop in Oxford Street in the early '70s).

Thanks for the review IRF. You are unnecessarily modest about your skills at discussing music. What you have to say on the piece largely mirrors what my sources tell me.

I pretty sure that it was, IRF: I've even a vague feeling that there might be a copy (with a very lurid sleeve IIRC) somewhere in the storage unit where all my LPs are stored.

The concert was last night and I quite enjoyed it Thanks for the review & the excerpts, IRF. In case you missed it (I know you don't always read the 'Opera House' threads), I noticed that JL is doing a concert with the Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen next February (see the 'Tannhäuser in Hagen' thread) . I wonder if they plan to give the concerto another outing.
