whilst singing the Chanson de Roland (presumably not all of it, as this would have taken the entire day).

Am I the only one who has now a mental image of Harold's army listening to him singing the entire thing, tapping their feet impatiently, yawning and looking at their anachronistic watches? Harold himself perhaps being played by Graham Chapman?

Kitty, a warm welcome to the 1000 Club!

I'm not usually a record hound, but this is a favorite Machaut recording of mine.  It includes a number of recitations (i.e. without music) by Dominique Vellard.  The rendition of "Doulz viaire gracieus" in particular is killer.  If you're not familiar with Machaut's secular music, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

We know that at least 7 surviving manuscripts of Machaut's works survive and that he himself supervised their writing and correction. We must therefore presume that it is Machaut himself depicted here putting the 'finishing touches' to the Lai that follows...

Why isn't music as beautiful as that today? The occasional impressionist painting plonked on the cover is a gesture in the right direction, but not a patch on the old stuff.

I think his Mr Punch looks more interesting...

But the old stuff still looks less cluttered!
