I have been listening to Tchaikovksy's Fifth Symphony recently and I've noticed for the first time how much the second movement is in a way similar to certain parts of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. Extraordinary.

The Nutcracker, which I recently heard at the Gateshead Sage.

The celebrated Litolff scherzo.

Borodin's Polovtsian (spelling?) Dances from Prince Igor.

Berceuse from Faure's Dolly Suite (think Listen with Mother).  The whole suite is a jewel.

Eric Coates' London Suite.

There must be many more.  I'll keep musing.

Ian.

Thank you for raising this interesting thread,Jan.

I tend to come across 'popular favourites' as fill-ups in  'collection' CDs,e.g.Furtwangler ,of all people ,conducting the 'Pizzicato Polka' and the overture to the 'Merry Wives of Windsor'.

My Dad was a great Gilbert and Sullivan fan and after his deatn I listened again to the more popular of the operas and found them delightful, especially the Gondoliers and the Mikado whuch I think have Sullivan's finest music.

Apparently Otto Klemperer composed a Merry Waltz (an oxymoron?) which was a filler on one of his recordings.  I've never heard it--has anyone else?
