Ah yes, that always brings a tear to my eye, though I never fully am comfortable with the "we are really just like him" (or whatever) line.

I don't know the song, but it couldn't be a reference to the (equally uncomfortable, though possibly in a different way from what you meant) line at the end of Invisible Man, could it?

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

I think the lines is "I am really just like him"

but in context:

"And in my best behavior
I am really just like him
Look beneath the floorboards
For the secrets I have hid"

because, gacy was extremely polite and kind to everyone he met, so no-one knew or suspected anything.  he is just commenting on the fact that no-body can ever know another person, we can be so secretive.  everyone has secrets.

definitely makes you stop and think, in fact...heres a treat for you

Indeed.  And what you said does make sense.  And yet I feel psychological defensive-mechanisms kick in whenever those closing lines come 'round.

I'm not too fond of that video myself personally; in that for me it takes away from the song itself. The song that maybe does it for me most on that album at the moment is "The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us!" (I've heard the JWG song way too many times now); it's certainly the most Whitmanesque of the bunch.
