I had a masterclass with him too, Daniel! It was on the Bartok Suite. He was completely brilliant, and, as you say, very kind. He finished by playing the complete Brahms Handel variations and brought the house down.  Smiley

... finished by playing the complete Brahms Handel variations
... which he's just recorded! I'll be editing the booklet in a month or two.

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

Strangely enough, I've witnessed one of his masterclasses. Ace bloke, but I've not met him for years.
I heard him play the Liszt sonata once. For reasons of space, I was sitting underneath the piano . . .

I don't know what kind of sound one gets from underneath the piano?
Is it booming sound or muffled sound or no sound?
I should try it once. I don't come in contact with grand pianos much.

I never played in Master classes. I did not see many master classes.
I think a person who gives a master class is in a difficult situation. You have to say something positive, but you can not say a lot of things because you are not going to be there to supervise the student in learning it this way.
One has to be selective in picking up the most important point (or weakness) of the player.

Loud.

Especially if it's David Wilde.

Much classier than mine, martle. I did two rather oft-picked Chopin Etudes (Revolutionary and Black Key) - poor David he must have quietly cussed into his morning tea when he saw the playlist, wondering where that talented green boy had gone.
