That absolute simplicity is sheer alchemy. There was a transitional time in my life when Pat Metheny's 'The Way Up' was a kind of indispensible anthem. Some music assumes a kind of belt and braces utility alongside its musicality-I guess when it has that anthemic quality to it. How it achieves that is the question. At that point there's a thin line between the teenager playing the idol onto whom they project and the bit-more individuated,er, adult version,whatever`that might signify.
