Alistair, London to Bath is 180km or so, while Paris to Bordeaux is 550km. Not quite the same sort of thing.

I know that, of course - and the speed at which the trains cover that French route is an utter embarrassment to us here. But the distance from Chingford to Waterloo is much less than either...
