It makes me think that it could well be a good idea if we were to do this every week or every day. You could have a system where different areas of a city would have their power cut for certain hours of the day.

Didn't Ted Heath introduce that? I don't think that it was very popular.

I must admit though I found it quite a strain making my own entertainment in the dark for a whole hour.

Oh well, that would never do. Let's forget that then.

One thing I have successfully done since having a computer is to keep a good eye on finances. I've used the Microsoft Money program for over 10 years.

End of tax year I'm checking a few things and with this Earth Day thing I wondered how much damage we've done to the planet in 10 years;

since April 1998 :

electricity bills £3688
gas bills £3705

diesel fuel for cars £14,495 (me)
petrol fuel for cars £3,790(my missus)

other interesting numbers:

groceries £36,796
dining out £7,347
(though that's only those paid by card)

holidays £27,358

ATM cash withdrawals £34,723 God knows what that was spent on, a fair amount of beer Roll Eyes  Cheesy

Frightening.

We just had the one chunky scented candle near where we were.  It only burned about an inch into it.  Nothing else was on in the house.  No tv nothing.
We were chatting away and come to think of it, I think it might be a good idea for more families to do that!  Spend an hour with no other distractions and just communicate.  In fact we were so tranquil afterwards that after I'd left the message on here, we went to bed.  Very early for me obviously but I was so relaxed I thought I may as well in view of losing an hour today.

All in all, a very pleasant excercise.  Cheesy

Yes MJ, when we have power cuts here it's always fun, a few moans and then everyone starts having interesting conversations. Candles are at the ready and there's matches and cigarette lighters in drawers.

Also I've got a wind up gramophone in the dining room which occasionally gets a spin, no fuel consumed in winding that up  Smiley Of course I'm alone in this house actually liking 78s of classical or jazz music so there's a few novelty items handy for a laugh, like George Formby, Elvis, Henry Hall and the Laughing Policeman  Cheesy

Let us take the opportunity here to advise Members always to use a recommended make of chamberstick. Use of plastic beakers as improvised chambersticks is a false economy which could one day destroy your house as this photograph shows!

Does this prove that member Grew is a fan of the Wiggles (qv) or that he is not?

You're a better man than me if you can get £3 out of a cash machine, John. (It's OK, don't tell me ... 2 x £1.50 commission charges. Or maybe you used an ATM abroad.)

A question to Mr Grew: Were the Wiggle-men holding their hands up and screaming before you exposed them to heat, or is that a result of homemade-chamberstick practices too?

It reminds me of a favourite phrase of the old Cambridge composition chair, Prof Goehr whom you admire so much, who was frequently heard to say of a student: 'He needs a firework up the arse.'

tinners,

You had me thinking for a minute, but the explanation is that it's in fact not just ATM withdrawals. Whenever I've gone into Tesco for one or two bits and asked for £50 cash back then the whole bill has been assigned 'Cash Withdrawal' so I could have added some pence too  Cheesy
