Were you there last night, IGI or Harpy, or are you going to the second sitting on Friday?

Friday evening at the Barbican for me, George. I've heard Kunde on disc (in Cellini, funnily enough) but not seen him in performance before!

I went to BC last night and thought it was fantastic, particularly the orchestra and chorus. The soloists were fine but not all quite up to the same high standard; I suspect the acoustics in the Barbican weren't doing a couple of them any favours. Kunde though was excellent - he didn't sound quite the way he does on the recording but who does? It was not even slightly staged but the performances were so lively and expressive that it was easy to imagine the action.

Weren't they just! They played and sang their hearts out for Davis and from the broad smiles being exchanged between players they seemed to be loving every minute of it. Real excitement and pleasure in what they were doing. You're in for a treat on Friday, IGI, and anyone else going.

Just arrived home and I couldn't agree more, George. It's clear how Davis absolutely loves this score and how the orchestra and chorus love performing for him. The chorus were outstanding, sounding far more idiomatic than the Chœur de Radio France on John Nelson's recording. I really enjoyed Gregory Kunde's performance as Cellini - some beautifully soft high notes, which reminded me somewhat of Nicolai Gedda.

I wonder if they will patch some of the recitatives or whether they will retain the audience reactions? Lots of laughter and applause tonight, as I'm sure there was earlier in the week.

Oh, and I agree about Isabelle Cals!  Smiley
