Would his wife allow it? Meow! Actually I suppose it's appropriate that his wife wouldn't let him do Wotan given what Wotan's wife doesn't let him do...

Having given this some further thought, in addition to Massenet's Cléopâtre, I do like Ruth's suggestion of some Meyerbeer. I think L'Africaine is well worth doing, but for the Proms I'd want something really big...Les Huguenots. Not sure about the casting - I think Alagna would do a good Raoul, and I'd have objection to Gheorghiu as Marguerite, but I'd welcome other suggestions. Would Bartoli do Urbain, or is it too low for her? Not sure about the other roles yet. A friend of mine has a full fantasy Huguenots cast mapped out, if I correctly recall a pub conversation some time ago. He, too, named Alagna as an ideal Raoul, but sees Gheorghiu as Valentine rather then Marguerite. If I remember, I'll see if I can elicit the remainder of his list when I next see him (Friday).

How about Robert le Diable? I was all prepared to hate it during an undergrad course yonks ago, but remember being very impressed. And it's 'big', isn't it? I'd go to that (as well as most others suggested so far!).
That undergrad course performance didn't have Michael Goldthorpe in the main role, by any chance?

Not really one for the Proms, more one I'd like to see staged: Donizetti's Emilia di Liverpool. I'd love to know what the mountains outside the city look like!

Perhaps there's an opportunity for the Massenet gap to be filled in 2012 which will be the centenary of his death.
No such opportunity any time soon for Meyerbeer (1791-1864) unless 150 is a meaningful number, and even then, 2014 is seven years away.

Keith,
It seems you are a man of few words: thank you for breaking your silence after so many months. Might we, perhaps, tempt you into telling us more about the reason for your suggestion?

A man of few words, eh? Must be the influence of the piece. It seems just such an obvious choice; an isolated protagonist, a big orchestra, any action that takes place is interior, rather than exterior (not unlike Blubeard).

Though I think it's already been said that the main theme that year wil be Olympics, and it may be a somewhat shorter than normal season (the bid document originally mentioned a month-long series of Olympic themed Proms, it wasn't clear what this meant for the other month of concerts that we would expect - and they've probably changed hteir minds completely by now anyway).

I bet it sounded good when they typed it, anyhow...
