Unless you have a luxury-name cast,  or you've got Quentin Tarantino to direct, you cannot flog opera to tv companies.
Indeed not even then unless you have someone unusually gifted to turn something for the stage into something for telly! Brian Larges don't grow on trees...

Doubtless the increased cost, now £9 billion or so, will have to come from somewhere. However, even if you took away the entire arts council between now and then, it would only cover about half of that.
That much?!?!? Cripes...

Problem is that bbc 4 has dumbed down, when they should have dumbed down a little but not all the way that they have, too much 'what about viewing figures' and not about 'are we catering for a particular bbc 4 style audience'.

Yes.  Although they are showing the Ring Cycle and Kombat Opera are on BBC 2.

As to the other point: if you don't think these cuts will be repeated at every arts, sport and community group not associated with the Olympics then you are sadly deluded.

There is simply no other way of affording the games.

And by affording I mean, "getting at least in the same time zone as the actual budget".

If the olympics was run by smart folk they would require all sporting and travel infrastructure stuff to be in place BEFORE people bid for the olympics, not after.

This way all the rich countries that want the olympics would have to spend cash on sporting stadiums BEFORE they bid and the world would end up with far more sporty places.

now,you see, the greeks, they were much smarter in organising things, they kept it simple and cheap

How much can an egg and spoon actually cost, anyhow?

Or a sack, for that matter?

I'm afraid we can't tell you that until we have had the McKinsey eggsperts in to advise on cost saving measures we can implement during the egg procurement procedure.

Perhaps it should be more like the EuroVision Song Contest, where this year's winners have to stage (and pay for) the next one?

I wouldn't mind having some of that money resting in my account.

Ah yes, like the Peloponnesian War.

(And no doubt all those simple slaves rather helped to keep things cheaper...)

Well, having mentioned him as an example of how funding ought to be managed, Nicholas Hytner - Artistic Director of the National Theatre - has published an article in today's GUARDIAN suggesting exactly as others here have done, that Govt funding of the Arts risks being ransacked to pay for the Olympic Games.
