What an imaginative lot you are Smiley Smiley Smiley. I hope all opera directors are reading this.

I think the version with Barbara Windsor as Tadzio is my favourite. I'm still trying to work out my own version, which is set in a baked bean factory, but I can't quite make it work Smiley

Von Aschenbach meets Wozzeck? You may have hit on a rich seam of opera production ideas there.

Ah, that would be with Ashburton instead of Aschenbach, I think?

That's the one, Ron. A terribly poignant final scene involving the tragic consequences of one too many clotted cream teas.

Somehow I think the "Doctor Who" alternative may have been overlooked:

"The Curse of Fatal Death in Venice"

How about Gordon Kaye as Aschenbach, Sean Hayes as Tadzio, and Jon Pertwee in a cameo appearance as Papageno?

  • Eth & Dennis - a bittersweet cameo by Alan Bennett
  • 'Effin' Menace - the infamous Adriatic punk-rockers
  • Denis The Menace In Venice - DC Thomson try to cash-in on Thomas Mann's success. Denis is followed around by a creepy man in a straw hat, but Denis sets Gnasher on the dodgy old geezer. Gnash! Great fun, eh, readers?
  • Denis Pennis in Venice - rather unsuccessful reality tv show tests spiked strawberry dessert recipes on Austrian men in Venice
  • Des in Venice - that old Des O'Connor magic on board a romantic gondola
  • Deafen Venice - Rammstein perform live outside St Mark's
  • Depp in Venice - paparazzi swarm as Jonny and his latest girlfriend take a punt
  • Debt In Venice - unable to afford the bill for his strawberries, Aschenbach takes the only honourable course available to him

They say travel broadens the mind - but in many cases travel has made the mind not exactly broader, but thicker.

Delft in Venice: pottery translation from one canal to another.
Daft in Venice: A nostalgic return for one performance only of Jeux Sans Frontieres. Chuckle as the white-coated polystyrene fop vacillates over gate-crashing the Polish Team's triumphs. Commentary by the appolloing Stuart Hall. Courtesy of Eurovision and Canal Plus.....
