Sorry, but I was disappointed...to tell you the truth, I've never been much of a G&S fan, but I did like THE MIKADO, and THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE has its moments... It was a pleasant enough way of passing the time, but that was all. Glad I made the right decision and went for some variety in life.  |

It took me a few decades to understand that simple fact, Donbasilio. The heroine is usually positive character and I am on her side. I tried to keep the tradition no matter what. It took a leap of faith to finally drop that notion as many other notions in life I managed to hold on.
Did you school stage Wizard of Oz? I would be good for scarecrow part, though I secretly wish I would be Dorothy.
Lord Byron, I don't know you for long, but as far as I can see you often make right decisions. I am aspiring for that all my life, but more often than not they elude me. That is my lot in life, I am afraid. Sometimes I surprise myself and make the right one. Now I have to remind myself, that this is often not better than that. I don't remember where I read it.

tp English schools very often do musicals now, I understand. My niece is singing Maria in West Side Story this spring. But the music master at my school (who was clearly off his head as might be apparent from what I have written) would not have dreamed of doing The Wizard of Oz. (For some reason The Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland in particular used to be very attractive to gay men. I prefer Gilbert and Sullivan.) (The difference between musicals - Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady etc - and operas - Traviata, Carmen, Boheme, etc - is very difficult to say formally, but used to be as clear as the difference between man and woman.) Carmen and Michaela make an interesting comparison to Dons Giovanni and Ottavio. Ottavio and Michaela are decent people who sing wonderfully beautiful music. Carmen and Giovanni are sexually promiscuous, possibly heartless, and sing much more popular, formally simple numbers. And yet they are the characters that everyone remembers. I think Micaela and Ottavio make better decisions. |

Do you really think Don Ottavio makes a better decision, Don B? I can't remember when he made any kind of decision at all... he's one of the most indecisive men in opera, isn't he?  What's his stretegy for dealing with Don Giovanni's ball? " Simulate!". He reminds me of the cartoon character "Spreckley" who used to appear on the inside back cover of "Time Out" many years ago now  There's a theory that THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is basically the Don Giovanni story (Frank-N-Furter is the Don, Riff-Raff is clearly Leporello, Dr (Von) Scott is the Commendatore, and Janet Weiss is Donna Anna... Eddie the Biker is Masetto, inspired casting with Meat Loaf in the movie version )... and if you follow that line, you end up with Ottavio being the specky nerd, Brad Majors :-) ("We'll just play along with them for the moment, Janet - and then we'll pull out the aces when the time is right!") I think that all of them in that final line-up have some major character flaw - except maybe Zerlina, who is the only normal one amongst the whole bunch of them >:-> |

Further thoughts on Don Ottavio. He sings two ravishingly beautiful love songs, but he only does so when forceful Donna Anna is off stage. Donna Anna seems the sort of girl who would have that effect.  |
