Since we've already mentioned him, here's Shicoff in LA JUIVE. Ernani, you say "I know he's had his problems" - what were they? Shicoff went through a marital breakup which impinged badly on his career - on one particular evening proving such a strain that he went to pieces in the middle of a performance. He stopped singing for a while to get himself back together, and he is now back on very strong form. |

We went to hear La Juive in Paris last weekend, with Shicoff. I don't think he has a very beautiful voice any more compared with old recordings I've heard, but he still gives great Eleazar, even though he was supposed to be ill the night we went - Rachel, Quand du Seigneur brought the house down.
I was bowled over by Anick Massis as Princess Eudoxie, though.

I'm afraid I don't know Meyerbeer well enough to make comparisons, or Auber at all, yet  (What do you think would be a good Auber to start on?) I think maybe La Juive works better staged, because although it has strong musical "numbers" it also has some musical longueurs, but in performance there is dramatic impetus to carry you through those longueurs. The libretto is mostly cr@p but it's well constructed from a dramatic point of view and the music is successful in turning up the tension at pivotal moments, e.g. when Eudoxie visits Rachel in prison. Apart from the music, I suppose the contemporary resonances make it interesting too - the stuff about persecution driving people to the end of their tether so they will even use their children to further the cause. Shicoff has pointed out that it might work well with Eleazar as a Palestinian. |

We haven't exchanged any messages before but I have read several of yours with great interest. I particularly like Gedda and recently came across a beautiful but short song (by Glinka) performed by Gedda. MabelJane kindly found me the words but, despite my efforts, I have been unable to obtain a translation. MJ suggested that I ask you.
Could you possibly assist, please, by providing a translation of this:

Thank you for the translation. I am very grateful. Thank you also for such a wonderfully quick response.
I only very recently realised how much Glinka had written. I will probably now try to buy a CD of the Romances. I will try to find one by Gedda or Jussi Bjorling. They both seem to be able to sing with such a sweet tone that they are ideal performers of this type of song.

Not sure if Bjorling ever recorded any Glinka Bxxxx. But in terms of Russian music, his recordings of arias from Prince Igor, Eugene Onegin, Sadko and some of Rachmaninov's songs are well worth looking out for. Enjoy  |

Thank you again for your help. I have just realised that I already had a copy of the words of that song in Cyrillic, before I asked you to deal with a transliterated version. I am not at all familiar with Cyrillic. Therefore I can not tell whether this is the same as you provided.

BXxx if you read my message with translation (message 25), you will see that I had a Russian text on one side of it.
It is exactly the same text you have in your message.
I stand by my translation (literal as it is). I only was too lazy to look for one word after candle. It is the word for what candles are made of. Vosk in Russian and it is wax in English.
