Yes they are.

There's something about standing string quartets (or 3/4 of them) that bothers me.  Even if the cellist is perched on something higher than an ordinary chair, it doesn't seem right to me.  Then again, when I'm playing in small chamber-sized orchestras, I prefer standing.  Hmm.

Just been listening to the Holliger from my LA recording and I really enjoyed it. Didn't listen to the whole programme but I might treat myself later.

In my experience "safe piece - modern piece - safe piece" is a standard programming formula which avoids people being able to duck out of the nasty modern work ie they can't arrive late or leave early. In a way it's not fair on the audience members who only want to listen to Schubert and Schumann but one or two of them might discover that they are pleasantly surprised by the filling in the sandwich. This whole area is extremely tricky for musicians and promoters alike.

I never did get around to listening to the Schumann quartet on iPlayer, but looky here, right now I'm listening to Afternoon on 3 and to a similarly structured programme:

Michelangelo Quartet play

Haydn: String Quartet in B flat, Op 76 No 4 (Sunrise)
Stravinsky: Three Pieces for string quartet
Schumann: String Quartet in A minor, Op 41 No 1

and no, it's not the same Schumann quartet (No 1 instead of No 3)

Loved the Haydn, a quartet I don't have on disc, found the Stravinsky strange but I listened, and now the Schumann is on, again new to me, and is enjoyable, though I am also typing up a technical report on something completely unrelated.

I've had R3 on for most of the day John, but I've been working on preparing a concert programme so I haven't really listened - in fact I can remember the Haydn Sunrise starting but can remember nothing more about the Michelangelo Quartet concert Embarrassed
