Management people tend not to be hall-half-full people.
For me, the real problem is that if you start 'widening access' in a way that alienates your current audiences in order to gain a new one (and arguably one that isn't going to come to a) half as many concerts as your current audience, and b) may not even come next year), it's not as if there's a comparable festival round the corner to pick up the slack.
There are many ways that the appeal of the Proms could be expanded in ways that would preserve (in aspic?) the current audience and possibly even involve them while drawing in a steady stream of curious new punters, but I fear that this isn't exactly the business model that the powers-that-be will pursue.

I also read in my programme for Prom 71 that the average audience this year was 87% capacity. That sounds pretty good to me!
