As regards Ms. Hodge, MP for Barking (or Barking MP - whichever you prefer) I see on BBC2 there is a new series this week - the demise of the white working class - and guess what? No, you won't believe this - you really won't - hold on to your reality and sick bags - the programme on Friday is focused on - wait for it - hold steady now - Yes! Barking!! The constituency of said Ms. Hodge.
Cynical? Moi?
Politicians, manipulative? Never.
Bleeetch!

Martin Kettle - loyal as always to the Dear Leader - weighs in on his side too in the Grauniad: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/mar/05/artspolicy.classicalmusicGiven her career history with support for women and ethnic minorities, I think it's long overdue that Britain opened a diplomatic legation in the Nenet territory of Northern Siberia. It's not icy there all the time, of course - in the 1.5 month summer the sky is black with legions of mosquitoes. They're dormant in the other 10.5 months of ice and snow - it's amazing how they survive winter temperatures of -57C in hibernation. Margaret Hodge's determination and pride in Britishness would be undimmed by such conditions, I'm sure. She'll make a fine Honorary Consul, and in keeping with Nenet tradition, it's the women who build the igloo - so she can build one as the British Consulate. I'd recommend an initial 10-year immersion posting with no right to fly south to balmier locations like Yakutsk (a mere -40C in winter). After the first 10 years she could maybe have one weekend per year in Tomsk, as a treat.

Thanks for posting that link to the Rupert Christiansen piece, Reiner. I think he hits the nail on the head there. Can you imagine if the Sports Minister was that 'off-message' about the London Olympics or not being seen to support the England football team? He wouldn't just be pilloried, he'd be sacked. I'm guessing that Mrs. Hodge thinks the Proms shouldn't be a classical music festival any more, because not everyone in New Labour's Britain likes classical music - why should they, when there's excellent music like Oasis and Simply Red and the Arctic Monkeys around? Perhaps she would even like to see all the visiting orchestras replaced by rock stars who would charge £120 a ticket? I can't think what else she's implying. Or maybe it's just about being able to take a beer into the arena and having a chat during the music - would that make people more 'at ease'?

I am touched by your good nature, Mr Macrae - you have assumed that some artistic rationale lies behind the Barking Member's diktats. For myself, I fear it's more about wishing to be associated with "feelgood" stuff in a febrile bid for ticks on ballot-forms. Plus, of course, espousing the common touch by seeming to despise them toffee-nosed ol' classical crap-lovers, man

I see she gives god and the queen an honourable mention Anna. Good to see the Labour Party keeping up its proud tradition of looking out for the poor and powerless. For myself, I fear it's more about wishing to be associated with "feelgood" stuff in a febrile bid for ticks on ballot-forms. I'm very much afraid you're right, Reiner. Unfortunately this means I don't count because I can hardly withold a vote which, for all sorts of reasons, none of this shower were ever going to get anyway!

It's still boringly predictable though isn't it, even if Mansoor didn't in the end deliver what the commissioning editor probably expected. Take an Asian who doesn't like classical music and dump him in the middle of the Last Night. Not any other prom in the entire season, just the Last Night. As for being the only Asian face in the Albert Hall, surely some mention needs to be made of the number of attendees of Chinese, Korean or Japanese origin that could regularly be found.
