And if you don't have a two button mouse, you just hold ctrl when you click and it does the same thing (as trj does in his first message). Rather confusingly, holding the apple button seems to perform the same function as holding the control button does on a PC.

Thanks for the tip, btw hh - I shall bear that in mind for future occasions.

(I went with pngs in the end - you can see the results here: http://www.bpmonline.org.uk/bpm9/bertoglio.html)

Well that looks eminently satisfactory!
There are slight pixelations to the hairpins and beams etc. but I imagine they came through the exporting from the notation software. Must be annoying if you couldn't contact the author and ask for the original files (sibelius/finale/etc.). It's got to the stage whenever I do any kind of musical examples, I send graphics files and several different formats of sibelius files.

I hope editors thank you for that sort of consideration!

Yeah, the minor pixellations were on the (Sibelius?) originals. One can only do so much though ...

Absolutely. Completely agree and I suppose it's an important consideration for anyone undertaking editorial work...

Just for the record: PNG uses a lossless compression formula (effectively the same method used to compress ZIP archives) and so will always give a true image, unlike JPEG, but will generally produce much larger file than a JPEG.

There is very little advantage in converting PNG to GIF; the PNG will normally be 10%-30% smaller than the GIF and the format has other advantages too.

The only real reason for using a GIF these days is for animated images... or if you need to support some ancient browser for some reason.

Also for the record: if you have Word 2007 you can extract images directly by unzipping the docx file and looking for the PNG files. A docx file is a zip file. Simply rename <file>.docx to <file>.zip and you will be able to open it with WinZip or similar. You will find that it contains a separate .png file for each image in the document. The only problem is working out which file is which image  Roll Eyes
