It's possible to enter accented letters and other symbols using the ALT key and the numeric key pad

eg à is ALT+0195 ã is ALT+0227

make sure you include the "0"

PS I tend to access these boards from a desktop at work, and so I do use the technique you mention. But there really is no easy way of getting an ř, is there, with ALT+anything?!?

No, Word 97 and earlier versions are indeed devoid of this facility and even the one I use (which, being Word 2000, is itself way out of date now)

I'm now using the laptop here which has Word 2003 and there's a very comprehensive range of alpha characters available.

The ALT technique is only useful if you have a list?

Since we're only really dealing here with composers names and titles of compositions I think the Wiki site is still the handiest/quickest route to serve our pedantic nature to be correct in names musical  Smiley

I think it might be possible to get extended characters by using the unicode format (&nnnn;) but have never quite figured out how to get my computer to display unicode. If anybody ever manages to simplify the steps I have grand plans...

Not with ALT plus anything I don't think. But you can rotate through keyboards (so to speak) with a simple shortcut in Windows, at least so I remember from the days when my then-girlfriend had an AZERTY keyboard which I used to set to QWERTY. You could have Czech set up as one of yours.

Georgian characters, (after undoing the zip , they all looked rather small) , all look like variations on "artist formally known as..."

...it's not impossibly tricky on a Mac to have Russian and Czeck (Wink) in the drop-down menu next to the clock. Really not too fiddly and doesn't feel at all like cheating.

Only problem with the Mac sets, though, is that they don't always work through this board, Oz.

(BTW, are you using Safari 3? Do you find that it only shows you the first line of the preview pane? This has only happened recently, but it's not easy.....)

Ah. Now of course incompatible character sets are complete bowlocks but indeed I have no idea about all that.

I'm on Firefox anyway. The GLOW function doesn't really work but I can live with that. I know it means I don't quite get the full majesty of King Kennytone's work but it's a sacrifice I'm afraid I have to make.

Ollie, I didn't even know what the glow function was supposed to look like since I almost exclusively use Firefox. Tried reading your post with IE last night - think I can live without glow as well.

doesn't even work in the newest version of firefox.  I think it might be something that's not in the official specifications for html.  (I've just checked: it's not).
