Ron

Good to hear from you Smiley

The Elgato is still in its box as I discovered too late that it can only run on 10.4 (and I'm still on 10.3.9). I thought rather than upgrade to Tiger now it might be better to wait for Leopard in the Spring. What do you think?

There is another option other than Windows and Mac...... my preferred choice is Linux. (I'm just not very good at it.)  Grin

Dan,

I think we can be pretty certain that Leopard will be rather more immaculate than Vista...I asked mainly because I ordered the Elgato Satellite box just after you talked about your order, and find it absolutely superb, utterly stable and completely reliable...

As you may have gathered, one way and another things have been somewhat hectic for me recently, but I'm still dropping in when I can.

bws,

Ron

Ron

Glad to hear your Elgato box is such a success. I'm almost tempted to buy Tiger now...

be replaced by a Mac so we'll be exclusively Mac.

The thread today about spam remioneded me that I forgot to thank mahlerei for this advice, and I think he left the group a while ago:

My problem was with Windows XP and loss of 'user profile settings' which meant losing Favourites and always having to set English UK etc at strt-up. The solution above included the simple advice of just setting up a new account on the PC and transferring any 'Favourites' and important 'My Documents' stuff into the new account. So quite easily everything was OK again (I don't use Outlook so that was not a problem for me).

So I set up acccounts for the missus and kids too (we never did that previously) but I've had to make everyone a 'computer administrator' because otherwise the Norton NAV doesn't set up properly in the 'limited' accounts and they could't access all the images in the digital camera program, darn, there's always some problem or other.

And because everyone is a 'computer administrator' there are no 'private' files. Well, whatever,  we are all nice people here so not a problem Smiley

Not sure what your particular problem is John but I must say that I've found XP far more reliable than ME. I had ME on my previous m/c and had to reinstall it several times - all due to Norton AV which I'd never touch again, it's wasted so much time for me.

I've read this elsewhere about reinstalling Windows to make it run quicker - I'm not convinced, since it takes so long to do, and it's something I fortunately haven't been forced to do in the 2 years since I got this m/c. It's possible to tidy things up as you go along eg stop all those programs that you don't really want from starting automatically when you turn the m/c on.

I backup regularly to an external hard drive - I actually use a progam which I've written to do this which makes it a lot easier, but it should be fairly easy to copy across the important folders manually. I also run the Windows backup program which you have to install yourself, it doesn't come as part of XP.

I've scrapped ME on my old m/c and have got a version of Linux called Kubuntu running on it. It's pretty good but I haven't worked out how to get it to connect to the internet yet - this isn't only due to the fact that I haven't got a cable running into the room it's in  Wink
