Probably my favourite LPs are two boxsets of Richter playing Bach's WTC. The playing is sublime, and the sound is exceptionally clean - these are probably the quietest LPs I have. Quite a rare combination of great playing and sound:

Yes these are wonderful recordings, Tantris. I remember listening to them in the college library when I was a student, but unfortunately I don't have them myself, and now that your message has reminded me, I'll be keeping an eye out for them.

By the way, what do the Matrix numbers on records actually tell you? I'm relatively new to LPs and would like to be able to tell the difference between issues, etc, but don't really know where to start...

Matrix numbers let you know which stamper was used, though different companies had very different systems....

Matrix numbers can tell you the recording date - if you have a cross-reference listing of session dates and issued numbers. The matrix nos for most 78rpm record labels are quite well referenced but vinyl less so. Take numbers (i.e. session attempts at recording) are usually indicated on 78s too.

Speaking of old record shops, Harold Moores website has been down for a few weeks - does anyone know if they are they still open?

I walked by Harold Moores today.  It's open, and hasn't been converted into a chain café or restaurant - yet!

Inside goss suggests that Harold's sold the business to some Americans, so there might be some 'restructuring' to come....

Thanks for all these posts on Harold Moores.  I used the internet to find out it was at 2 Great Marlborough Street, and I went there today.

Turns out that it's a record shop I stumbled across when ambling through London some years ago, and promptly forgot where it was.  I've been really keen to find it again, so today was happy serendipity!

And I asked the guy inside about the state of play.  Apparently, Harold sold up a couple of years ago, and there is no recent change of ownership, nor plans to close.  The chap did say that next year, their rent comes up for review, and he thought there was no way they would be able to cope with the rise, so they may well have to move.  But not thinking about closing, yet........

I bought Stravinsky conducting Oedipus Rex and Belohlavic's Martinu's Epic of Gilgamesh.

Now that I know where it is, I can imagine I'll be buying a lot more vinyl.  Wink
