Welcome, Natalie! I heard you play a piece by Michael Chant a few months back. (Hmmmm).
I was playing in the same concert.

I note with interest a William Masselos connection - a phenomenal pianist from recordings I've heard (Ives 1, Rudhyar and Copland). I'll post a question over the weekend.

Autoharp,
You must be the composer-pianist, who also played in Dulwich Library, right? Nice to meet you through the board!
Hmmm indeed (but you elaborate first!). Still, I like new music performances, because you can capture the inherent excitement of first performance without the high-brow attitude (as in comments and comparisons with a beloved version which is also usually recorded: live performance is supposed to project immediacy and spontaneity, rather than cold, cd-like, politically-correct reproductions. But then, this is only my humble opinion...).
Masselos! The teacher of all three of my American teachers (and my most important ones, though Larissa Dedova, former Moscow Conservatory professor and first teacher of Pogorelich, was a catalyst even though I had one long open lesson with her in the US). I didn't think anyone knew him this side of the ocean! I'll wait for that question with interest!

(cont.) ...And not to provoke any unintended controversy, I certainly have my favourites when it comes to recordings, and there are recordings (usually the older ones) that have an immediacy of impact that is hard to find even in live performances. But I certainly separate my recordings' collections from any expectations I have when I go to a live concert (and expect it, even demand it, to be different, if only for the added visual component and being in the same room with the artist/s).

Welcome to the board Natalie - from someone who went to Strodes College, just down the road from your university!

Jonathan,
Thanks! where is Strodes College (is it in the US?). First I graduated from the American College of Greece (so it's not near there), then from West Chester University of Pa. (maybe there?), and just graduated from RHUL (University of London).  Undecided

Masselos is well known to those of us who eagerly sought out Ives recordings as they appeared in the late 60s. I haven't heard performances that really rival that of his recordings of the 1st sonata (maybe Bryn has ?) and those in addition to the Dane Rudhyar disc of Granites and Stars + Copland's piano variations confirmed that he was the best around when faced with that sort of craggy, tough guy American 1910s + 20s stuff.

as for the hmmm I'll PM you !

Ok, stupid me - I misunderstood the abbreviation for your college!
Really ought to pay more attention...

Jonathan,
I googled Strodes, and got the idea that, silly me, this is in Egham and I ought to know better. Isn't this what you meant?! Now I am confused! By the way, Royal Holloway musicology (MMus) classes are mainly in Bedford square, London, so I am not so attached to Egham campus anyway... Still, thanks for the welcome!

Hi Natalie,
Yes, that is what I meant!  It's been a long very busy week at work after a long and busy month, also at work.
I'm looking forward to a quiet, relaxing weekend and listening to lots of Liszt - my favourite composer!
(I'm also taking a temporary break from the boards for a while so don't be surprised if I'm not around for a bit - I know I keep saying this but my wife gets quite annoyed with my sitting here typing for hours!)  Grin
